You're right. It doesn't have any bearing Marac ;) i am the first one to tell you that our team NEVER share our entries. Why would be do that? We have weekly emails from our team leader, keegbow, cheering on the team and updating us on future competition but that's about it. i've been here almost a year and the WPL has not influenced the scores whatsoever. If my image is bad, it will score bad. If it's great, I get a good placement. Simple as that ;)

I was really hoping this would fare better. Still early though. Alot of votes still to come in. What few comments I have had I have been very pleased with along with the scores given by some people that I really admire here at DPC. Keep em coming.

I was hoping that my scores would be going up with every challenge entry, but I guess not. A little on the depressing side, to see that your scores are getting worse.

Learn from it I guess no reason to get upset and quit.

There you go.... Im still smiling... why?.. because I think my image is great, Im learning photoshop techniques and sometimes the route i choose does not agree with DPC voting but I certainly dont let it ruin my day.

Now if you'll all excuse me Im going to get ready to hit the pub... no, not to drown my sorrows but because tonight at 7pm(3hours time) the great ARSENAL are playing in the champions league and its on Sky 1 ... now THAT gets on my nerves, it used to be on 'normal' telly ... Villareal will get traunched then I can jump for joy.

Scores change, up and down like the syrian empire (monty python) don't let it worry you, dust down and crack on with the next

Does anybody know the mathmatical formula for tracking your votes received from one vote to the next? I'm just curious... ok, I have no life. Thanks :-)

When I was still taking Caluclus and up to date on my mathematical skills I had derived a formula to figure out between votes what I received from any given number of new votes. That's when I had far too much time on my hands!

Ya, they always tell you in school that "you'll need to know complex algebra later in life" and I guess they were right. :-(

I have not entered many pics here, but I am finding my overly creative ones to be doing just fine. And my one overly humurous did darned good. But then I guess what is deemed overly creative/humorous is subjective and mine might just be somewhat average in creativy/humor to most voters.

As I stated in another thread about commenting, I think anything less than just super duper eye catching fantastic (yes, I know that's subjective, but still...) is getting lost in the shuffle of 400 entries. How can one artfully judge that many without becoming somewhat numb? I try to study each entry and give it an honest score, but one I might score as 4 or 5 during a challenge, could possibly be appreciated on its own merit far more if I just saw it weeks later on the 'recently commented' page. Does that make sense? It is discouraging to the entrant to have their scores low balled - I'm falling victim to it as well.

I know that my "Old" score deserves much higher than the 4.9 that is currently has, but it's just being pummeled in a sea of anonymity because there are soooooo many other entries. Am I wrong?

Not a good start at all. :-(...but at least it seems that I am not alone. Maybe people just don't like old things? Maybe for me they don't like BW photos? Who knows, but at least I got one helpful comment.

It came up for a while and now is getting hammered again. Here's this morning's breakdown. Looks like my love/hate theory on this one is working.

1
2
3 3 3
4 4 4
5
6 6 6 6
7 7

How can somebody give a 1 and not comment??

This is depressing!!I really thought this was one of my best shots to date...at this rate it will not even end up on my profile page.

It seems the shots I don't care so much about ( like textures) do better then I think they will, the ones I "give birth" to, seem to tank...

Go figure...

Man, those votes are coming in slow. The scores can still waaaay change at only 40 votes.

Man, I have no luck. When I score my best it's in challenges were everyone does the same when my score suck so does most. Oh well, maybe I can break my record of 1 comment received and tie for the worst in that regard.

That actually may make an odd sort of sense. Imagine you go to a party and be charming and polite and make meaningless smalltalk to everyone. Folks, if they remember you at all, will likely have nothing bad to say about you after. "She was nice." But be yourself, express your emotions and opinions, and they'll definitely have comments after, even if they don't share those comments with you! ;) Some will like you, some won't, some will feel uncomfortable because you made them think or feel. But hey, that's not a bad thing!!
Me, I usually go for the polite smalltalk, but every once in a while... ;)

I think you have to slavishly keep your finger on the update button and track 'em as they come in, pretty much?
04/19/2006 02:27:15 PM · #74
BeeCee,

It's just a weighted average. I take my previous score and multiply by number of votes (Ex. 4.2381 score x 42 votes = 178.0 points). I do the same after I update (Ex. 4.3409 x 44 votes = 191.0 points). I then take the difference in points (191.0 - 178.0 = 13.0 points) and divide by number of votes (13.0 / 2) = 6.5 average vote. Since I know it was two votes, it had to be a 6 and 7 vote. If there are many votes between updates, it can be more difficult to figure out what the individual votes were, but you can always get the average.

^ I have seen soooooo many people claim they know what score they were just given, but what is never factored into this "equation" is that somebody that had already voted may have just changed their vote. Thus making it appear they gave you a lower/higher schore than they did.
