silcone !!

a tip for all you folks who seem to have butter fingers. invest in a pair of wide receiver gloves. the kind with a sticky palm so that they can grip the pig skin better ;}

in my case it wasn't a case of slippy fingers, the camera was resting on my daugters baby carriege and when she started climbing out of it I had to make a choice, grab her or the camera, I grabed her and waited eternity watching the camera fall in slow motion to the floor and bouncing a few times on the tiles next to a pile of manuer.. we were in a stable at the time ;)

I didn't notice the crack when I picked it up, it was only a few days ago that I saw it.. had a really bad day after seeing my precious broken... bougt it in january for about $1500 including shipping and customs in mint condition, not a single scratch on it after 11000 shots, and I broke it after less than 100 shots :(

a finger smear of silcone will make it water tight again. just be sure not to get any through the crack to the inside. and maybe light scuff the body around the crack for better adherence. say 1000grit wet dry paper. use 100% GE silicone - clear - not the painters type.

take the value out of your daughters college funding ;}

I dropped a Nikon F3 and a 24mm lens into the fuel storage pool inside a nuclear power plant once. I'm sure that eventually it'll be stored deep underground at Yucca Mountain. Try explaining that one to the insurance company.

you should have included a note with the lens explaning what it's purpose is, so that when it's found in 20.000 years they'll know what it is :)

All I'm hoping for are some lens improvments like VR II technology in the 80-400mm. That way I can really have fun bashing my lens around before collecting the newer lens from the insurance company. ;-)
