This morning I had pretty much decided that I'm going to get the 20d for my first DSLR. So I go into Ritz camera just to hold it again and play with it a little. Well of course they don't carry them anymore in there stores but they have the 30d. I tell the guy well give me that and I'll just hold it and such and get the feel for the camera cause it can't be that different. Bad move. The 30d is a really nice camera! Obviously. I didn't realize that it had a 2.5" screen. That thing was HUGE! That would be a nice tool to have to double check your shots. Plus I noticed that it has an AF lamp instead of the 20d using the flash for such. Nice improvement as well. Man oh man now I'm more confused than ever. I had gotten my wife onboard with spending the money for the 20d just this morning now I might have to try to get that extra few hundred dollars for the 30d. The cycle never ends. :(

When you go to buy your 30D pick up the 5D and look through that big bright viewfinder :)

Huh? The retail on the 30 is a $100 less than the 20 was...but hold out for the 30, it's worth it. Especially if you're a sports shooter that likes to shoot raw. Good luck. :)

Don't worry about it. No matter which camera you get, it'll be obsolete within a few months anyway. Just get the camera that has the functions that you want or need, then go shoot some photos.

I bought my 10D a little over 1 year ago. At that time everybody had 10Ds and loved them. Basically, it was then what the 20D is now. I think I paid something like $1700 for the body, and $300+ for a 1GB SanDisk card. Now, I can get a 10D for less than $600, and a 1GB SanDisk card for about $60. But, of course, the 10D is now considered 'obsolete' and no self-respecting photo gearhead would be caught dead using one. :)
(Use 1 year old equipment? Heaven forbid!)

The funny thing is the camera is still like brand new, and it takes photos just as well as it ever did. Actually, it takes better photos now because Canon replaced the sensor chip a few months ago.

Heh... if that used 10D had been in the shop when I put my downpayment on my 30D, I might be a happy 10D owner now. Though, I can't say how much I'm looking foward to that 2.5" screen.

Now, who wants to explain to me what an AF lamp is?

The AF lamp helps the Lens focus in low light.

I have found Ritz to be more expensive for almost everything. Try buydig.com or bhphotovideo.com. Maybe the cheaper prices online will ease the blow ;)

The 30D is a wonderful camera. I took a lot of photos this weekend with mine and was so happy with how they turned out. You really should get it instead of the 20D - the cost difference is so little.

Yeah, I looked on butterflyphoto.com and they have the 30d w/ 18-55mm lens for $1,374. That's the cheapest I've seen it so far. B&H has it for $1,500. They have the 20d for $1,112 w/ the same lens. I just have to think if that $260 is worth it to me. I hate these kind of decisions.

I personally would not trust butterflyphoto.com according to their reseller ratings. Their reviews are so mixed. Reseller Rating But, I have seen worse places on the net, so it's your call :)

I wouldn't get too excited about the AF assist lamp; according to DPReview, the 30d still perform AF assist with the popup flash. Of course, I don't really know myself since I haven't seen one in person, but DPReview are usually pretty accurate in their review.

If you are super crunched for money, you would not be unhappy with the 20d. It is a great camera and most 20d owners are not upgrading.

Decisions suck, LOL

Also, keep the option of buying the camera without the lens and choosing your own lens :) (Just to add to your thoughts..LOL) The body only is $1079 on buydig.

Yeah, I think you're right. I just looked at Dpreview before you posted this and saw that as well. It looks like it has one, but so does the 20d now that I've double checked. Oh well.

The AF assist lamp is not something I would base a purchase around, unless you do a lot of low-light shooting. I'd say I use that lamp once every 2 months. Many times I just end up manual focusing in low light anyways :)

For whoever asked, the AF assist lamp is that weird burst of flashes you get when trying to focus in low light. That light illuminates your subject temporarily so that the autofocus can pick it's focus point.

That's what it come to - compare what is on the 30 that is not on the 20 (I don't believe they removed anything). Personally, I think it would be worth it for the spot metering; most would like the bigger screen; if you shoot RAW then the larger buffer would be good.

It's not like film where bodies were for a long time; Accept that digital is still moving and there will always be a better option next year. I think digital will get there but seems to show not much sign of it yet. The lenses seem to be much more stable, so spend the $ there.
