Just retired this year from the US Navy. MAC(SW). USS Hopper was my only ship (plankowner and Golden shellback). When I first joined I had to sign a form that I understood I wouldn't be assigned to combat duty including combat ships. Then I served on the Hopper and on our maiden deployment shot all Tomahawks during operation Desert Fox in 1998 on the first ship named after a woman (I believe).

Many of you have offered thanks to people here who are serving in the military. I'm curious though as to why? Many countries in the world have a military and what the military does is kill people in other militaries or groups their county sees as a threat. As this website is not dedicated to only one country, this tread can have people posting whatever military they served in. Therefore, there could hypotheticaly be someone that posts in here that says, '1940 German Infantry' (a very old person mind you). I'm not so certain that many of you are going to want to thank this person.

maybe cause we in the military don't only kill people. What a crazy (maybe even stupid) stereotype. how often do we come to peoples aid after disasters (natural and otherwise). In the US, and I'm sure many other countries, we have a completely volunteer service. We haven't made people serve for quite a long time, this means that these people (me included) are giving up their lives to help others. There are people in the military who are there as medics who don't kill and in a ton of cases actualy help heal the enemy. Saying the military is only there to kill is unbelievable. (edit to add...never mind, your 16 you don't get it yet...may never) edit again...you know this really struck a bad tone with me. Yes the military is there to sometimes kill people but it isn't like they just say "oh hi there, bang, your dead". We are protecting our freedoms and our families from "other militaries or groups their county sees as a threat" (your words). Without someone defending our way of life and protecting us what the hell do we have? Take a good look at what most well formed and disciplined militarys do and I think you will have to change your mind. Now I must go before the SC has to remove my post for things I shouldn't say. (btw I say "our" not only to mean the USA but all countries that have a military to protect.)

Now since that wasn't the intent of this thread...I am updating my earlier post...I have less than 24 months till I retire and finally get to live day to day with my wife and daughter...we've never even been on the same time zone let alone in the same state. For the last 18-20 months I will be over 10 hours away from them which is better than half the world I am now, but still sucks to not be with the ones I love.

Thats what I figured. But it is just a little ambiguous.

Well. I guess that I am the oldest ex-military at DPC. I was a Naval Lieutenant in the middle 1960's to the early 1970's and served in Vietnam. In fact, I served at approximately the same time as Senator John Kerry. Well said sabphoto, kandykarmyl and trevytrev.

Sorry for what I said. I know that the military dosen't just kill people. I was trying to make a point and I guess what I said can be taken badly.

First of all, thank you to all of those that do and did serve and spouses of the same.

My only military claim...my first cousin, Chuck. (Also see the NOTES: 1970, #14. :P He's such a neat guy!

My dad was in the army at least from 70-72. He took some cool pics (which I can't seem to find right now) mostly of his sailboat and beautiful girlfriend, from what I could tell, he enjoyed Vietnam :)
My cousin is also serving in Iraq.

As for what KevinC said, I really doubt anyone here would bash someone who from a different military. In each person's eyes, they think they are on the "good" side and if they want to have patriotism toward their country, I say let them. I personally don't support war at all in the first place, but I can understand the sentiment for a person to stand up for something they believe in.

I agree that people should be able to have patriotism toward there countries and support there militaries. I support mine. I was just saying that people were saying thanks but not to anyone in particular, just a 'thanks to all those in the military', and I was pointing out that they may not be thanking people that they want to be thanking.

Any DPC'ers in Kuwait or Iraq for the next 6 months who want to have a get together? :-) I think I'll be taking the Rebel with the kit lens and the 50mm. Everything else will have to stay home.

My uncle, Bobby, fought in WWII, USMC, Iwo Jima, died a year after he got home:

Bobby's the little guy playing with his dad / my granddad.

Then there was my Great uncle, Walter (namesake) US Army, now 93 (sorry no pic of him right now) He fought in the Burma theatre in the Pacific. To this day won't buy anything Japanese. On his 93rd birthday he was reunited with the man who pulled him , wounded, out of battle and saved his life.

My dad served in the Army at the end of The Korean war as a communication specialist.

And now, my son, Kyle, USMC Reserve. Just returned from his summer training in Hawaii. Graduated Parris Island last October:

One of my greatest regrets in life is my decision as a young man to avoid military service.

I know I've probably already said too much in this thread but just wanted to know if everyone (I'm pretty sure only U.S. Miliary...sorry) knew about the Together We Served website? I don't see a link for Army..weird.

I've been a member for a short time and it is kind of cool going back and finding old friends...I personally didn't want to join cause you have a membership fee but after the trial period I decided to anyway so I can find more old shipmates. Just thought I'd pass it on.

I have been in the Air Force for thirteen years now. I am not counting down the day to retirement, but I can tell you that it is 6 years, 5 months, 4 days, 7 hours, and 42 minutes until I reach that milestone.

Thank god time flies!

In all seriousness the military has been great to me. I have travelled and seen so much in my life and I know that I never would have had the opportunities handed to me had I not joined.

haha - was going to reply to this and to save myself trying to remember it all and type it out again, searched the forums for a thread where I had posted a list with the ships I was on, then realized it was this thread I found.
Duh.
