Okay, I posted a few days back about finally deciding to get a XT. It will be a few months before I can pony up enough money for a new lense so im wondering if getting hte kit, or buying the body and a good lens right of the bat? THe lens I was looking at was the 50mm f/1.8 but not sure if it will be as versitile as the kit lense as far as length. Its roughly 80mm with the conversion correct? also the 50mm f/1.8 says its AF but there is also a manuel focus correct? Cheapeset price I have found was 729$ plus the 100$ rebate from buydig, any other sites that have a bertter offer? pulling the trigger friday. Thanks!

Oh yeah at first I will be shooting mostly downtown ( austin ) some shows in dark areas, hence why I want hte faster lense. Just figured Id give you an idea what im doing before you make suggestions.

For starters, the 50mm 1.8 is good and fast, and can be found for about $70. It's a good second lens to get, and yes, it does have Manual focus, too.

As to the Rebel, I'd get it with the kit lens. The 18-55 isn't a super shocker lens, but it's a solid performer for well-lit things, and having the zoom range will be easier to work with than just the fixed 50mm. I've kept mine, even though I've gotten several other lenses, just for it's wide 18mm and walk-around versitility.

Good luck, hope this helped!

The 50mm is AF which you can switch off to make it MF. The kit lens is underrated and an essential learning tool and allow you to get wider than portrait width. Look on EBay, they go pretty cheap there.

yeah, I figured Id be missing out on to much focal length :(.. I really want the 50mm 1.8 but I guess it will have to wait a few months. However 729$ is a good deal? I figured after the mail in 629$ with a lense is insane considering I worked at bestbuy when the 300d was close to if not over a grand.

I think a kit lens is a good idea no matter what the camera. Once you can consistently get good shots with the kit lens, then you'll really start cranking out great shots once you upgrade.

Is it a good price you ask? - I'll say yes. I just picked up my XT this past weekend at a membership warehouse. The kit went for 799 less the 100 rebate direct with Canon, effectively $700. Your deal would be $629.

Don't forget, the kit does not come with any CF chip. Either use one you already have or plan to buy one too. (I spent an extra $60 for 1Gb)

I debated about body only versus kit, and I'm really glad I got the kit. I'll figure out my "dream lens" in the future - I'm simply too impressed with the kit as is now - and I'll have a spare lens.

Hope that helps your decision.

The kit lens is OK. I don't know that it's at its sharpest at 18mm and it for sure isn't at its maximum aperture, but it's better than the lenses on most point and shoots at least.

The 50mm is really nice, it's sharp and looks great even at 1.8, really small and lightweight, good shallow DOF when you shoot wide open, and using a prime is just more fun than a zoom sometimes.

The 50 is an AF, but the focusing isn't anything to write home about. Mine had an issue with the AF/MF switch where it wouldn't actually switch between the two, but it resolved itself after toggling it a lot of times.

Get the kit lense....

Here are some prices on the body plus lense....

Here is a review of the kit lense...

18-55 Lense Reveiw

Buying it with the body generally cost less than $100 and the lense is well worth the cost.

I have the kit lens, and it's not a great lens at all. The only thing it's good for is that it's very wide for a standard lens, but the focusing system feels very cheap to the extent that I hate putting/removing lens hood and polarizer cause it feels so flimsy.

hi, get it :-)
i use it a lot for wide shots and of course the results are very bad if not stopped down to f8 or f16, noticably at the borders the result are very very soft ... but for this price you should get it

i wish i knew you were looking for a camera. i just sold my rebel xt with lens, 1GB, wireless remote, and camera bag for $700. i upgraded to the 30D. get the kit lens. it's not bad for what you pay for.

The 50mm f1.8 is a pretty darn good lens and a great value for it's price. But if you are getting a new DSLR and will have to survive with only one lens for a while, the kit lens is the way to go because of it's far greater versatility. You will probably want to get the 50mm somewhere down the road. And you'll probably want to upgrade to something better in the same focal length range as the kit when money flows more freely. But you can't go wrong with the much-maligned kit lens as a budget level starter lens. Canon knew what they were doing when they designed that lens to go with new DSLRs, and it has served it's intended purpose well for many, many buyers new to the world of intechangable lenses.

I'm not a Canon owner but one thing I've noticed over the past year and a half is that almost every Canon owner carrying the kit lens always points it out with a shrug and says something like "piece of junk, I know...but it works". If I heard that once...I heard it a hundred times....but I don't know why? Seems like a good working lens to me but a little cheap on build.

Just an opinion but the 50mm (Nikon version) is too long to walk around with. I miss too many shots with that one to even bother with it anymore. It's great if you're certain about distance but when things start to vary you can get all screwed up...that's been my experience.

The Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 seems to be the hands down DPC, low cost favorite.

Used by this member, this member, and this member plus many others with awesome results.

Good Luck.
