it's interesting. normally i embrace the opportunity to go 'nuts' with photoshop.

but this time, i just submitted a regular shot modified only within the normal rules.

and it's doing pretty well :)

I wanted to see a shot where it wasn't obvious that editing had been done.. So, the more subtle you were the better I liked it.. My top image has clearly had a lot of work done on it.. but it so well done that you can believe it to be a 'normal' photo..

I have to say that I am impressed with the photos that were entered in the "future" challenge. I have never given this many 10's and 9's before. Congrats to all! It is too bad there can only be one 1st place finish because more than one of you deserve it.

I don't edit, I don't crop, I don't own photoshop. Like my rhyme?

All of it is true. I wish we lived in a world where photoshop didn't exist. Okay, maybe to improve a picture that you are going to sell, or a family photo that you need to take red eye out of, or a stain off a stark white wedding dress that you are going to have forever, but not for challenges like these.

The only reason I really loved this challenge is because I had the opportunity to submit a photo I had taken in the past. I took the pic two months after I got the camera, and I have loved it since. It has some serious problems that I probably could have fixed... but to me, my digital camera is just a regular 35 mm that I happen to be able to see the pictures right away on, and I don't have to pay for film developing.

P.S. I have chosen to obstain from voting on the future challenge, because I hate photoshop that much. I am a photoshop hater. Sorry everyone. I just don't feel as though I can vote fairly, however look for my comments after the voting is done, because I do have some comments I would like to make.

Finally, I have been getting a lot of votes and many funny comments on my pic. I am really enjoying sitting back and watching the votes go. However my finger is cramping up from the clicking.

You didn't crop or adjust the lighting at all on your challenge entries or the 2 portfollio entries? I'm impressed if that's the case.

I like your take on this subject.

yea.. and if it is no holds barred why are people being disqualified??? Maybe I don't understand what "no holds barred means"? Let me think about that.. I think it means you can do anything... I guess not..

Kind of pissed... going to sleep now.

Here is exactly what the challenge said

Take a photograph that might give your viewer a glimpse of the future.

Extra Rules: There are NO editing restrictions and NO date restrictions for this challenge. The sections "Post-shot Adjustments" and "Exposure Date" are not will not be considered for disqualification. This is basically no-holds-barred, so make it a good one!

I thought the parameters seemed a little ambiguous. I stuck to the lifting of restrictions on exposure date and no post shot adjustments (spot edit) for my pic. Since they were the only restrictions specifically mentioned as void for this challenge.

However since it said "no holds barred" we should stick to that for this challenge and respect the choices of the presumably many people who felt this was free license to do whatever. I'm sure next time restrictions are lifted it will be a littler more specific but to be on the safe side maybe you should have a lawyer look at the guidelines before assuming and submitting to the next challenge.

You're rhyme was nice, but your rhythm was a little off. ;-)

While it's always good to get as close to your final composition in your original shot and not have to crop, I think you're missing out on a lot with the other non-digital-art types of editing that's available. I'd love to see what could be done with your shots with a little levels adjustments, some sharpening, maybe a little color saturation. I tried tweeking your round shot a little, and was able to make it a bit brighter and livelier, but without the original I couldn't do a whole lot with the sharpness. A little pre-resize sharpening could really bring out some depth in those petals. The same thing could be true with your garden shots - especially on the levels, they could be so much brighter and livelier. And you don't even necessarily need photoshop - some of the cheeper software could get you the same results.

I do agree on the levels of editing on the future challenge - a lot of what was submitted doesn't appeal to me. But not just for the obvious amount of editing, but for the sort of tacky results. There are several examples of the same idea done well, and done really bad.

As far as a no-edits challenge, it's been suggested before, and the reception wasn't very warm. Image editing is really a legitimate part of the digital photography process, and many think that having a no edit contest is asking them to enter an unfinished work, something that's not their best effort. I would generally agree. The core of the debate comes at the question of "how much is too much".
