Hi dear DPC's!

I've got a question to you all.

What kind of lenses do you use for portraits?

I'm asking because of this: I've just returned a sigma 24-70mm f2.8 because th eimage at f2.8 was unusable because of it was very soft (almost like defocus). I was planning in using it in gig photos thats the main reason of f2.8 (and at weddings also).

It was a 2ยบ hand lens. It was a good deal, and my main target lens before the deal appear was the sigma 30mm f1.4

Well will it be usable for portraits the 30mm f1.4 or will it be too wide for that purpose. My second thought was the Nikkor 85mm f1.8. I know some people that use this for head and shoulder portrait photos. And my last thought after the dissapointment with the sigma (I was a big sigma fan sinse my 105mm macro) is the tamron 28-75mm f2.8 for general use.

Any opinions?

I love the Nikon 85 mm/1,8...of course 1,4 would have been better but for that price!!!!

also have the same kind for my Canon Camera...the bst you can find for portraits.

It may be worth getting another Sigma 24-70 and trying it again. I use one of these and it is acceptable wide open. Could be you have a 'Friday afternoon' lens and a different one might be better.

The first Nikon D2X I took possession of had completely useless auto-focus, so it can happen to any manufacturer :-)

I'll vote for the Tamron 28-75. Awesome lens.

I mainly use the 17-55 f/2.8, occassionally the 70-200 if I want more compression... I prefer a wider angle most of the time though, even for portraits. Ideally I'd like to add an 85mm f/1.4 to that. :)

If I could put my money in to it I would certainlt get the 17-55mm f2.8 form nikon. Awsome piece of equipment.

And the f1.4 would be nice on the 85mm but the pice is forbitten!

So... keep your comments please, I'm an open minded person that needs to be convinced :)

Ditto!!! Maybe a 50mm though for a 1.6 crop camera, that was my favorite on the 20D but I have both and now on a full frame I use the 85mm more.

80-200 2.8
not great for groups, but for individuals - YES! Indoors or out, strobe or natural light. head shot of full body +.

I have a 50mm 1.4 that is great if you are intimate with the subject (prime lens obviously you have to be pretty close to get full frame). The detail and bokeh tend to be easilly manipulated and the images are crystal clear. I've heard the "real" photographers tend to shoot from a distance so i might be out of line suggesting the 50mm.

hence the 80-200 suggestion.
if you get in too close you make the subject feel uncomfortable. if you start farther back and they get used to you then you can move in a bit.
also, some compression is flattering, so you need to avoid wide angle like the plague.

A 50mm on a 1.6 crop camera is getting close to the ideal portrait focal length range. 85-90mm are the classic lengths for portraiture.

I have a 50mm f1.8 and an 85 f1.8 I find those 2 lenses most useful for portraits. Both are acceptably sharp wide open, which is often where I use them.

I love my 50/1.4 to death... but it's true you have to get pretty up close and personal with it... and I do love the 24-70/2.8L, and I would use that if I could afford my own... =]
