Another conclusion: there are many more plain crappy pictures in the open challenges, and some of the more established members just don't enter them.


I can agree with that assessment wavelength. However, I do feel that non members vote lower than members do overall. The winning images in open challenges are in my eyes usually just as good as the winners in member challenges - but the average score is always lower.
