I've run into a problem. I recently made a great 5 feet by 1 foot poster for my mother. Here, if you're interested. The problem is that she can't find any frames that fit it and it costs $150 to get it professionally mounted and framed. Does anyone have any advice for finding/making cheap frames for 5:1 prints? Thanks!

Local art shops often have cheapish framing services.

If you want to do the framing yourself, then this site might be usefull.

BTW, that's a very nice poster!

Nice poster, Jason. I just started making my own frames and it's a lot easier than you might think. Here's my first one.

The initial investment is a little steep - about $300. Given the cost of pro framing you should be able to justify purchasing the tools after making a few frames.

Ahh, the problem is that my mother and I are now on opposite coasts, so I'm wary of giving her tons of complicated things to do in order to frame the gift I gave her. It seems like a terrible gift when she has to pay so much to frame it, huh? Perhaps I will have to start making my own frames and send her one in the mail with the print next time. 5 by 1 is not a frame size that one can buy anywhere?

Have her check around with some local cabinet companies and also check with remodeling contractors. Usually they do these kind of project on the side and when they have time to spare. She probably can find someone to make the frame for her for a very modest price or even check with the local vo tech woodshop often a student can make it for materials only as a project.

Maybe have a local woodworker make the frame and then you go buy the glass yourself. I wonder if that is alot of the cost. I just bought a frame at radio shack for $7.00 and went to the glass store and paid $4.00 for glass.

I haven't tried them out myself yet (been meaning to), but //www.pictureframes.com has all sorts of sizes plus you can specify custom sizes. Might be worth checking out. Good luck! Oh, and if you find a good online place to custom-order from at a somewhat affordable price, let us know in the forums :)
