What about the fish market on Maine Ave? I think that would be a cool location!

There's tons of cool locations, just a lack of time. :)

Any negative feedback on the June 16-18 weekend for this GTG? Is this date looking pretty much a go?
04/25/2006 10:16:05 AM · #54
Okay, the weekend is set June 16-18th in lovely Washington DC.

As it was last year, the reccomended hotel is the Bethesda Hyatt. This is a great hotel with a perfect location. (Right above the Metro Station).

I'll be looking for volunteers to provide floor space for those who are poor. :)

ouch I just checked their rates :(

You are always more than welcome to look for other locations. Keep in mind that summer in DC is high tourist time. So everyone's rates go up.

I like this place because it's on a metro, has good access, food around the neighborhood and it's in a safe place. You can leave your gear there and not worrry about it being stolen.

As always, this is just my suggestion, you are more than welcome to look for better rates. If you find a place with a great rate, please email me with the location so I can check it out for you. Some areas of town are really, really not places I reccomend staying.

And don't be shy about asking for roomies either. :)

Does anyone know much about this hotel?

The State Plaza

Their rates on Expedia are $109 a night, and they are only 2 blocks from the Lincoln Memorial. From past experience this is where we have been around 3-4 AM when folks start to "hit the wall". It would be great to have a home base to retreat to and get a drink, snack, whatever and recharge before sunrise.

The hotel is only 2 1/2 stars but looks fine to me - I don't plan to be in it a whole lot over the weekend. The one downside is that it is 4 blocks from the metro, not one. But with the amount of walkin we will be doing that seems trivial to me. Let me know if anyone has any feedback. Expedia can make a reservation, but they show sold out on the hotel's website (Expedia must have a block reserved for them).

Man already planned my vacation for this year.

Maybe next year.

That would work. I typically think a little more right on the metro, but that's a fun neighborhood. So long as a GROUP walks back there from the Memorial, it's not going to be an issue. It's near Foggy Bottom/GW, which means you'll have to remember transfer times when taking metro to the Zoo or to Union Station.

I'll probably crash at a friend's. Most likely scenario for me is arriving Saturday morning and taking off Sunday afternoon. (But I'll see what I can do about swinging Friday too.)

I've stayed at this hotel before. And it's not bad, although it's ben 3-4 years. It's situated between the Lincoln memorial and George Washington University.

Edit to add: I'm willing to share room and transportation costs. Anyone driving down through Philadelphia?

I just checked the web site and they say June 16 and 17 are sold out.

I am still not sure I am going to stay there actually - I have to lock in that I am going at all, but I would act fast and get a res through Expedia.com if you are interested in staying there.

I live in Silver Spring.

There is at least one hotel here close to the metro that is a little cheaper and in a safe neighborhood.

Days Inn - Silver Spring; $75 on Expedia

Is Hotel Blemt available? I might be off work by then. I'm not promising anything, but it appears I might be able to go. ;)

edit...might being based on the slim possibility that our district is giving bonuses in June for good attendance... yeehaw!

How's the itinerary coming?
I'm hoping that Saturday will be the all-nighter. Planning to find a place in or near DC on that Friday and stay two nights before heading up to a hotel in Baltimore area. My tripod carrier will be accompanying me. :)

That's the plan at the moment, anyway. If we don't get the lease on the townhouse we want things could change...but I'll probably know by the end of this week. (I hope, I hope, I hope....)

BTW, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday-ish after the gtg I'll be on my own in the B'more area should anyone want to meet up for some shooting time.

any plans for a get together on Friday?
05/01/2006 09:06:56 PM · #72
I need a location for a Friday hang out. :) Chez Clara is a bit on the small side...

Last year was great! However, may I make a suggestion? Can we have dinner earlier this time? I think we better off starting shooting at sunset into the night. I know it is a NIGHT tour but sunset is terrible thing to miss on any photo outing.

Is this tour possible and/or the meeting places accessible by metro? I am thinking about taking a train from/to Philly and would not have a car.

Just get yourself a hotel on the metro and you are all set. :) That's the beauty of this whole operation. All walking and metro accessable.
