Wish it were an April Fool's joke... but the only fool here is me. No leaving cameras in the car henceforth for me :(

Check into just insurance for your new camera once you get a replacement.

I have a $3000 policy wiuth Cotton States and it only cost me $36/year

Covers loss/theft/damage

Well, in most newer cars the trunk can be popped from inside the car. So, once they are in your car, they also have access to your trunk. Sooooo...

True, but having the camera out of sight reduces the temptation to pick your car to break into.

Another quick tip would be to place it in the trunk before you get to your final destination.

My sister-in-law had her purse stolen because the thieves watched her lock it in the trunk when she parked and went to the beach.

Thank you everyone for your kindness, and also for the excellent suggestions about insurance. We are going to look into getting insurance right away, probably renters insurance or maybe one of the other kinds that have been suggested.

When I used to valet park cars I had to laugh at a guy who pulled up and took the time to collect stuff from in the car (even the center console), put it in the trunk and then handed us all the keys...HELLLLLOOOO?!?!? Thanks for showing us where the stuff is, do you somehow feel safer now? We only had one moron ever steal from someone...idiot stole a cell phone and didn't turn it off so the cops showed up at the shop and called the cell phone...it rang in his pocket lol.

I do however believe that out of sight is better and I would probably even go as far as to leave the open camera case in the front seat and put the camera in the trunk (or cover it with the mass of crap in my car), hoping the person would see the case and say "dang they took the camera with them".

Sorry to hear about your loss Arpita, hope you can get a replacement soon maybe even a better one.

A local photographer here who travels and camps a lot recommends keeping your equipment in coolers. They're nice and sturdy, they keep your stuff cooler in the summer and there isn't much temptation to break into your car and steal your picnic.

Make sure it's not one of those fabric ones though. Co-worker had her window broken yesterday because her lunch bag probably looked like a purse.

Welllll...my lil' car is a 97 ford escort...and doesn't have a latch to the trunk. I don't even have electric windows! Bought it from a little old lady who towed it behind her motorhome...so I got a great deal :)
(I do miss keyless entry)

Wasn't aware that having it locked was a condition of insurance claims. Might need to look at another carrier. Our neighbor had theirs broken into under same conditions and the contents were covered.

I will review my policy tonight to see. I am assuming my insurance covers it.

Oh wow, I was just in Davenport (few miles south of Half Moon Bay) on Saturday - but I had the camera with me. Sorry for the loss - good excuse to get the 30D! :-) (sorry, trying to find the silver lining here).

FYI, definitely get personal property insurance people, it's cheap, $1 for every $100 invested, covers theft, breakage, etc.. - well worth it! I even threw my laptop in the mix (seeing as it is in the same backback as the camera).
