I finally got my Nikon D200 last night, along with a Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 and sofar I love the combo, the AF is probably the biggest thing I noticed sofar, it is little faster and MUCH more accurate than a USM lens on my 300D (even though this lens isn't known for AF performance, but is a bit noisy compared to USM) The other thing I like is that I don't find myself going into the menu's so much, all main controls have a button, including mirror lockup, quality etc... it's a nice change, (higher end canons may be like this too.. dunno)
if anyone is looking for an upgrade to the lower canons, and don't have a huge investment in glass, the nikon works GREAT.
Now if it'll only get a bit nicer out so I can go take pictures.

Good choice. Now get some real Nikon glass like 70-200 2.8 vr

One day I'll get D200 myself.

How does the 70-200mm f/2.8 compare between "Nikon Nikkor VR" vs. "Canon EOS IS" ?

Any sites doing a comparison?

I've used both...they're virtually identical for practical uses. not sure about the tech specs, but the speed, size, weight are very similar, and the images are spectacular from both.

the canon's a funny colour though :)

I think they are the same.

that's the first lens on my list, as soon as I can sell my canon gear to pay off the D200 I'll be getting that lens. I've heard great things about the 70-200vr at first I thought i might be a little $$ but hey, better to buy the best the first time than go through 3 lenses and buy it evenutally anyways.

I've heard, but just in the forums, that Nikon buys/licences their VR technology from Canon. As such, Canon naturally keeps them a step behind.

I can't verify this as accurate, but it was somewhere else in the hardware forums here.

It doesn't really matter that much.

When you start getting to the point where you need ALL of the VR/IS/AS abilities of your camera/lens, you will start getting inconsistent results.

In other words, if you are actually moving enough to require a full 2 stops of VR, you aren't actually going to be getting truly ultra-sharp results for a significant number of your shots.

I could not afford the 70-200vr so I got an 80-200 AF-S for a third of the price. I dont have the VR but the Glass is Exceptional! So if you dont need the VR its a way to go.

Good choice sir... Enjoy the difference.

24-120 VR is an amazing bit of glass that is going to of dropped in price now the 18-200 VR has arrived it will be a great addition. have fun with your D200, I am even considering trading my D2H to get the D200 I dont need the speed now Im not doing sport stuff would rather have the extra MEGA and less bulk.

I dont think thats true.

IMO, VR technologies are way over priced considering cost/benefit. VR buys you a slight improvement in handheld shooting, except in rare cases, not worth the extra cost.

I doubt that is true considering that Nikon recently introduced the VR II system that now is rated at 4 stops.

When you get a lens over 200mm with VR/IS, you can actually see the image get steadier in the viewfinder. Definitely worth it IMO.

I guess that the accuracy comes from it being an f/2.8 lens. As for focussing faster than the 28-105 USM, well the Nikon version of the Tamron lens must focus a whole lot faster than the Canon one, as the Tamron is no fast-focusser on a Canon camera.

For those of you who are young and spry the VR/IS may not be worth the $. But, I have MS and often experience spasticity in my legs. I have a friend (Canon shooter) who has tremors in his hands. I can tell you that we both appreciate the technnology.

hope you have fun shooting in the future.

true nikor (nokon) lenses are really quiet you won't even know they moved sometime the scen will just apear in focus. i've bben looking into higher quolity glass and the 24-120 VR is a real king of a lens. but if you can afford it the 18-200 vr is just drop jaw amazing. i'm still saving for that 1. once i get it the kit lens will rarly go back on.

_bran(yeah for happy nikon users)do_
