At the start of the week (ok the middle, wednesday), when i saw the garden challenge had over 350 entries, i thought to myself:

"how boring! i'm probably not even gonna bother voting."

Well, today I went through and voted on every photo, and also left a comment on every photo, and i'm very glad i did! I gave more 10s in this challenge than I have in any other. 42, and I havent finalised my votes yet so I may bump some of my 9s.

The comments I left were pretty blunt and honest, so I hope I didnt offend anyone. Please don't take them the wrong way.

Normally I'm a speed voter and finish voting in 10 or 15 minutes, but doing it this way makes me look harder at every photo. I suggest everyone does this once in a while, and comments on every photo as you're voting and not afterwards. Maybe don't be mad and choose a 350+ challenge, but any challenge you do this on will help you appreciate the photography more and learn from it.

I agree that voting for each entry teaches you lots of things. When you finish and can review your votes -- you always move things around. I learn a lot about photography from it. I also learn heaps from participating. I take new pictures I wouldn't have thought of before.

I love this website!

Thanks Konador for your vote. I just got mine : ) -- a 10 : )

Renee

Konador,
I just noticed that you left a nice comment and vote on my entry. Did you keep track of how long it took you to do all of them? I have been trying to at least comment on 20% or so and that is tough enough.
Thanks,
Dick

Konador, I totally had the same view... 350 boring pics to go through so I didn't even vote until yesterday. But almost immediately I realized how great MOST of the pictures were! I rarely give 10's or 9's but gave two 10's and two 9's and lots of 8's, 7's, etc.

Great job everyone, can't wait to see the results! Good luck!

Looking at my LiveJournal, at 12:45pm I'd done 70, and at 3:45pm I'd done 200. Then I took a long break until about 1am :)

This is indeed inspiring and an example to emulate...
Thanks to you , even though I did not enter the Garden challenge

My compliments on your grand effort - many will greatly appreciate your comments, too few bother. Thank you for mine and the imlpied gentle reminder not to grumble about the lack of comments if you haven't done that homework yourself!

Hi! I logged on yesterday evening and saw that my submission had over 190 votes. But today as I log in there are only 170 votes on my submission? Did the DpChallenge database crash, or what has happened!?!

Thanks for the comment on my picture Konador. Nice of you to comment on every photo.

You voted AND commented on all those pics? You must not be working this summer if you have that much free time. I've been voting and voting and still haven't finished. *sigh* Thanks for the 10 though ;P

I made a goal to comment on all shots it forced me to 'really look' at the shot. I tried to comment on all the 'contrast' shots (though did nt make through all), I always go back to comment after rating and I certainly changed my votes (usually for the better) after a second and longer look. It does improve skill and discernment of shots to have to comment.

Ben, I wanted to thank you for my comment. You were the only one that pointed out a major flaw that I hadn't noticed till you did... Dang horizon :)

Thanks from me too Konador :)
I've had 10 comments made in this challenge (a record for me) they are all nice, but have no idea what any of them voted out of 10. My score is struggling to keep its head above 5 so i think i submitted a "that's alright" kind of pic. Mental note to self "submit near to deadline and only if heaps less than 300 entries received"

Do people think that voters should vote on all entries and not 20%? I vote on all entries now, after feeling guilty and doing the 20% minimum the first time. I think it gives everyone a go at a better score. I wonder how many counted votes the winner gets compared to the last place?

Thanks Konador the comment was very nice. you have inspired me to push on and do my best to get as many comments out as I can.

i agree. when i saw there were 350+ entries, i thought it was gonna get pretty boring and old quick. instead, there were a lot of great shots. didn't quite comment on nearly as many as you konador, but did on over 25%. none of my comments were meant to be offensive either! and one more thing, konador, what bob said. haha. :oP
