Hi

Been trying to find the answer to this question everywhere and was wondering if anyone could help. When i plug in my digital camera into my computer i would like it to appear as a logical drive on my system, and not put under Cameras and Scanners. If anyone knows if this is possible, or how it is done then please let me know!

Cheers
Darren

I can't actually answer the question the way you asked it as I have only uploaded directly from my camera exactly once.

I recommend getting a USB card reader (appx. $20). When you plug it into a port it will be recognized as "new hardware" and will show up as a drive. Just drop your CF card into it and go to your file management window (in Windows, right click Start > Explore) and you can treat the files the same way you would any others.

I do it this way because:
1. I know I'm making direct copies (without intermediary software) of my files...ergo, they're originals.
2. I can upload to any computer with a USB without needing Canon's proprietary software installed.
3. My card reader tucks inside my camera bag and goes wherever I go...easy to use....light weight.

Hope that helps.

4. No worries about draining batteries during download.

5. Card Readers come in a "USB 2.0" variety and those can copy files FAR faster then the camera is able to transfer them to the PC.

6. you can leave your camera setup on the tripod while you remove the card and download the images.

Guys

Problem is that i need to have the camera plugged in to the USB, and drag the photos of it in between its use, therefore the card reader is not an ideal option.

Seems bizarre that other digi cams run as logical devices and others do not.....

This is common to Canon cameras it's just the way they do it.

i don't understand why you would need to do this...?
dragging them from a card reader would be the same thing.

He may be doing time-lapse photography or something like that, and not want to open the camera up to remove the card; justw ants to download while the setup remains untouched.

i don't think this is possible while still shooting w/o using the remote capture software. when the camera is uploading from the card i don't think you are still able to take photos.

maybe remote capture software is the solution then. although he did say he needs to drag them off to the PC between uses...

When using the remote capture software the images are uploaded as you take them, so that should not be an issue.

OK, here is the scenario

One operator is taking portrait shots, which after taken are then shown on the attached pc. Between shots the pics have to be manually dragged over to the computer from the camera. I have written software which would do this automatically if the camera was a logical drive, hence the need for it to be a logical drive.

Hope this has helped clarify the situation.

Using the latest EOS capture software (free) you can shoot tethered and the images will be transfreed to the PC as you take them - so that step would be automated for you. Isn't that what you want?

Unless this software does not work with the 300D, I am basing this on using the software with the 20D which works well.

so if you had 2 CF cards and a card reader - then the card reader is seen by the OS as a removable (logical) drive

1. take pics
2. take card from camera and plug into the card reader
3. put other CF card in camera and keep taking shots
4. repeat 2+3 ;)

or get USB extension lead (5mtr) from ebay (approx £3) and use EOS remote capture software that will download the pics straight to the PC via the USB connection :) - all you have to worry about is tripping over the connection ;)
