Part of our trip in August we will be staying in Las Vegas. Never been there. Suggestions? Best hotel bang for the buck? No not that kind of bang, nice place, with things to do for the whole family and/or close to other fun places. ;)

Stay at Paris and request for a strip room. That puts you smack along the Vegas strip witha view across to the Bellagio :)

It's like anything else I guess, depends on how much you want to spend. We have a trade show there every year so I book about 20 rooms, the best deal for our needs is the Excalibur.

We want a Ted Turner class suite for $100 a night, of course. ;)

My wife had found the:

Monte Carlo - $69.96
New York - $164.99
Excaliber - $102
MGM Grand - $169
The Orleans - $60

We could handle any of these (we need two queen beds, two adults, two children in the same room or suite), though we'd prefer to spend less if we can.

But it would depend on what the hotel would have to offer versus the lower priced hotels. Not sure what we'll do there. Go to shows, swim, take pictures.

I'd like to avoid hotels that are smokey in the lobbies, hallways, restaurants, etc., if that's possible in Vegas.

go for Excalibur then ;)

Forget The Orleans. If staying off the strip is ok check out the Rio, wonderful seafood buffet!

Every one seems to smoke in Vegas.

I did an Expedia search using the 3rd week in August, Mon-Fri.
Stratosphere - $39.00
Flamingo - $100.00
Monte Carlo - $91.50 (1 block off the strip)
Excalibur - Showed $80/night for me.
Circus Circus - $60.00
Bally's - $109.00
Harrah's - $100.00
There's many more. Obviously your going to pay for the name which is why some are more than others. If you limit your trip to checkin on Monday and ceck out on Friday, youll find better deals.

Bally's and Harrah's are in the middle and the rest are either on the Northern or Southern end.

At the Palms casino, the ventilation is extremely good. The air is incredibly fresh. The casino isn't that big if you like gambling. Also they are adding another structure next door so there is construction there.

Stay recently at Harrah's and it wasn't bad. Basically just went to the hotel to sleep, and shower so anywhere was ok. It is located near: Caesars' Palace, Bellagio, Paris : so it's not too bad if you plan to take some night shots of those places. Just beware to not get a room near the street pavillion. I believe it is the south side. They play music until pretty late.

If you don't mine the price, Wynns has an incredible view of the strip. You would be able to take some incredible panaromics up there.

Orleans is the cheapest. it is nice also. they have an excellent buffet. i would say there is pretty good ventalation too, it isn't real smokey. it's also barely ever crowded. it is VERY roomy. There is a jazz cafe. There is an arcade, movie theaters and large bowling alley. I personally love the Orleans. There are also hockey games at the Orleans arena right by the casino. I believe they even offer small buses that go to and from the strip and individual casinos for those staying at thier hotel, but u should check to make sure. THere is also a REALLY good oster bar.

good luck

I stayed at the Stratosphere at the end of February. It was a nice hotel with good rates but it is a bit far from the main part of the strip. We took a cab everywhere we went. The LV Hilton (Star Trek Experience) was about $12 with tip. The most expensive cab ride was going to the Rio to see Penn & Teller. It was $20 with tip. The Rio is off the Strip behind Caesars but not within walking distance from Caesars. Penn & Teller was worth all the money we paid. However, the tower is really neat with rides and a restaurant at the top. The casino is the first thing you see when you walk in and the smoke is not too bad.

I've heard The Luxor is priced well.

If you are going to see any shows, book very early online. We booked 2 months in advance and got 3rd row for Penn & Teller and front row for Cirque de Soleil Mystere at Treasure Island. Cirque de Soleil "O" and "Zummanity" are very popular and will book quickly.

Have fun!!! We can't wait to go back.

We stayed at the Flamingo Hilton and it was very nice....gorgeous garden in the middle of it as well. (flamingos, penquins, waterfalls, and tropical plants everywhere) As far as price I'm unsure....that was back in 98....but it was a very nice place to stay. I also stayed at "circus circus" and it was yucky....well, I didn't care for it. Little hole in the wall and very drab...cheap but drab.

With the kids, Circus Circus is really good, and afordable. Down side, you are at the North end of the Strip, not alot of stuff up there. The Excaliber is nice for the kids, and your at the very fun South end. I prefer the Imperial Palace, afordable, adn right in the middle of the strip. Honestly, I like to save on my rooms when I go, because, how much time are you really going to spend in your room??

Try priceline. If you've never done it, go to //www.betterbidding.com, ask for help in the Vegas forum. I've stayed many times at the Venetian for $99 + tax. The nicest rooms in Vegas.

For us, in February last year, the Circus Circus was the cheapest.
It is also one of the oldest and ugliest, but I didn't mind too much. We were too busy walking around to spend much time in our hotel, so price really was the most important aspect for us.

Sadly, the bus system proved to be a total disaster, so you might be better off being in one of the hotels more in the middle of the strip.

Be prepared for LOTS of walking - even each hotel is so huge and you always have to walk past all the machines to get anywhere.

As far as travel within Las Vegas goes, check out the Monorail //www.lvmonorail.com/
There is a station at the Sahara, which is a nice, inexpensive hotel.

i've been to vegas quite a few times. the monorail USED to be free but now they charge. it was a handy way to get up and down the strip, but a family of 4 now costs $20 for one ride so a cab is actually cheaper and more convenient.

i would recommend staying in the middle of the strip so that pretty much everything is easy to get to. that gives you a wide range of options, from cheaper (treasure island, imperial palace (dumpy)) to more expensive (venetian, caesar's). i would recommend looking at the aladdin, which is quite new and can be had relatively cheap. i also was lucky enough to book a room at the venetian which was AWESOME if you can get a good deal. if you have kids travelling too, you can all stay in one huge room with a sofa bed and there's a giant bathroom, two tvs, a sunken living room, and a way to get away from each other a bit when you need to.

there's also a free shuttle that runs constantly between bally's and the rio, so you can get back and forth to there quickly. i did like the seafood buffet at the rio (and the "show" happens overhead in the casino, which is kind of fun to watch), but seafood might not be kid friendly.

i'd also head downtown to the fremont street experience. they've covered over a 2-or-3 block street with an overhead lightshow that's pretty fun (and free!)

in any case, have fun. if you find a $1 craps table, let me know. :)

Monte Carlo is a low key hotel.
The good thing about it is that it is on the middle of the strip, so you can walk to most of the big hotels real quick.
Unless you want to stay in a nicer themed hotel, I'd recommend it.

Plus walk up and down the strip in day and night as the watershow at Bellagio and Mirage only occur at night. Most hotels let you take pics inside. I think the most photogenic ones are Paris, Aladdin, Bellagio, Luxor, and Venetian.
here are my newbie snaps from a year ago.
