I've got the Powershot G2 and was wondering if the Close-up Lens 250D 58mm will actually make a difference. With some of the great entries in the 'In the Garden' challenge, I realized that a Macro can make quite the difference. Anyone have it? Worth it?

Thanks

Most of those pics are not macros, just powerful Canon zoom lenses!
This one is from 2 meters (yards) away:

I use a close-up lens and find it useful for allowing me increase my working distance. Instead of getting very close to the subject to get the magnification, it allows me to stand further away but use much more zoom than I would otherwise be able to do at that working distance. The upshot is that you get high magnification without having to be in your subject's face.

I have a Hoya +4 diopter lens which is great except that it introduces some colour fringing. I was thinking of upgrading to the Canon 500D (which is equivalent, I think) in an effort to reduce this. As far as I can tell, the 250D is a +2 dioptre lens and the 500D a +4.

There's a big difference in price - in the UK, the Hoya +4 is £18. The Canon 500D is £85.

I guess you could buy a Hoya, try it, and if you find it useful upgrade to the Canon. If you do get the Canon, I'd be interested in just how high quality it is.

If you're into macros and want to get *really* close-up, you could buy a 50mm SLR lens and reverse it. This technique is described in John Shaw's 'Closeups in Nature' which I found to be very useful. You could also have a look at this article on the subject by Mark Plonsky - some of his shots are simply amazing.

I've tried this technique but haven't so far had a lot of success - I don't think I've got a steady enough hand.
