I'm interested in learning about peoples experiments with large format printing from images made with digital cameras. My digital camera is a 6MP SLR, delivering 300dpi images, and I'm about to start printing from images I've taken with it. I can go all the way up to A1+ presently, as my printer arrived this week. I don't need any replies on calibration & profiling, as I'm quite familiar with that, its just on your own experiences - image quality, what paper surfaces work for you, what print sizes seem best, and so on. Also, any tips on reducing noise, sharpening, colour and tone work would be helpful. Anyone exhibited or looked at large prints from digital source images. What was your honest opinion? Should I stick to scans from MF & LF film instead?

I don't have a printer that will do large format myself, though I have had two B&W prints done professionally from my 350D (8MP) at 20x30 inches.
Upsized a bit in PS just to get a bigger resolution to start with. Uploaded to online print company and ordered!
I am really pleased with the results. Pin sharp on the "In Focus" parts of the shots. |

I've printed about 10 20x30 prints from my old Canon 300D 6.3MP camera, and all came out looking beautiful. Even right up close. Used shutterfly to do it.

I have used a PS pluginn called "true fractals?" to increase my file size to about 30mb. Used USM mask, and finished up with a quick run through neat image. This allowed me to get a couple of great 4'X 8' prints on matte paper. I haven't tried printing this large on glossy yet. They looked realy good it didn't start to pixalize until you were about an inch or two awat from it.

I think this should read 'Genuine Fractals' - and it is an excellent product. They claim that 400% increase in file size is possible without degradation. This all depends on the quality of the original of course.
I use it to upsize images for Alamy stock photographs from my Nikon D2X, creating file sizes of 75+ Mb (an image size of 20x16 at 300dpi).

Sorry, I don't know. Hubby purchased it for me. I guess you can probably buy it online?

Just wondering. Isn't it better to upsize in RAW conversion? I mean with my 300D CS2 allows me to upsize to 22 MP in conversion.
To justify my statement, I've upsized to 11 MP for istockphoto, which says in their TOS that upsizing is not allowed and the photo was accepted.
