Yup the wallets empty but the pocket is full of change :)

Seriously though... 700x700 looks good... but what happens when you add a title, challenge description and all that other stuff that goes above a shot during the voting stage?

We are back to scrolling, even with a wheel mouse a challenge with > 300 entries will be fun. I bet there are a few here who wouldn't scroll to see the whole shot.

Yes and no... even corrected my vision is 20/100. Legally blind. Uncorrected it is around 20/200.

Has anyone considered increasing the submitting to only 800 on the horizontal side and leaving the vertical at 640 (1.25:1 Ratio)?

Wouldn't just about everyone be able to see 800 wide. I don't know the stats but I would say well over 50% of the entries are landscape anyway.

I'd be in favor of that.

but... your vote alone equals 50 other votes :p ...

don't you mean 50%... :P

Langdon, you say users -- was the poll open to all users or just members? If all users, do you have the numbers for just members as something for us number freaks to pour over? :D

Just like I said earlier, if they would just experiment a bit with some mock up challenges and then we could see for ourselfs this would clear the air. Then we could talk better on the subject at hand, come on people its not rocket science. Did I say that right? lol

So I guess "seeing is believing"? That was brought up quite often in the thread about this poll but I guess you guys didn't read it?

If (when) the size is increased, the portfoilos are going to fill faster, so the next issue is when can we get, or have the option to buy more storage space?

No necessarily if they keep the portfolio pictures at the current 640X and only increase the challenge entries. Challenge photographs in your portfolio don't go toward you 25mbs.

My 19 inch desktops (F11 engaged) @ 1152x864........ Right screen showing dpc 800x test photo. The ability of the user & monitor to be able to accomodate higher resolution is the real issue. I would be in favor of 700x........

I can't believe I'm one of only 14 people running 1920x1200.

I am happy with any size that 75% of people could view without scrolling. If this involves a nonsquare canvas, that's fine.
03/17/2006 01:24:36 AM · #39
I think the file size limit does have to change. If we do go to 800x photos jpg compression will be more noticable if the 150k limit doesn't change.

I'm on 1600x1200 but I could up that to 2048x1536 which would have you beat. ;)

I didn't really care if the size was changed or not, either size works well on my monitor... I just wanted to say you guys do an excellent job on this site. It's hard to meet the demands of so many different people and you do very well. Good job.

wouldn't it be smarter to go 800x600?
03/17/2006 01:32:53 AM · #43
I don't care what happens I will just adapt.

I don't care either, but I did want to contribute something...

700x700 looks just nice!

Statisically speaking, you made the right call on not changing anything (given the numbers above). However, if x800 was taken out of the mix and now that x700 and x720 have been demonstrated, I bet you there would be a large part of the population willing to go to either of those image sizes w/o much debate. It would be an improvement over the 640, but not killer to those with lower resolution monitors.

You once experimented with the "exclusive open" challenges - would it be possible to have one challenge with an x700 size limit to see how people respond?

the following is a 800x691 image - i run 1024x768 and width wise this is no problem If I F11 my browser i can get the whole image on screen vertically BUT with any challenge you have a title, etc and with a 640 tall entry i stil have to scroll a bit to get it all in.

what about 800 wide x 640 tall?

Thats what I suggested - 800x640. Here is an example

EDIT: to take large image down to keep thread clean.

If you put a note on the voting pages that let the viewers know that they should press F11 (Full Screen Button) when viewing photos, upping the resolution to 720x720 is very reasonable.

How about 740x740 pictures with the DPC logo and menu displayed down the left side of the screen and the picture being voted on to the right at the very top of the page?

This would allow people using all screens of 1024x768 resolution and above to display the full picture straight up without scrolling, using the full screen (f11) and auto hide toolbar. At the moment even with a 1024x768 screen and a 640x640 picture it can be a bit tedious scrolling every picture into view, and then scrolling down again to vote.

A 740x740 picture would give almost 34% bigger images, and by rearranging the page it would make them quicker to view.

I have created a scaled down screen shot to show what I am suggesting.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/49858/thumb/307588.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/49858/thumb/307588.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

This is how the screen would appear at 1024x768 with a 740x740 picture, using Internet Explorer in full screen with a pop-up hidden tool bar. The voting bar, comment box and page footer could all be scrolled down to.
