What is shutter speed and how to change it?
03/13/2006 12:51:59 AM · #2
Its simply the time for which the shutter is open to let the light get through the lens. 2 seconds is a long time for shutter to be open in normal light conditions.

In most of point-and-shoot cameras it might not be possible to change the shutter speed as it is decided by camera based on available light and aperture. But all the "like-SLR" and SLRs have option of choosing shutter speed.

Since its long time for shutter to be open, Tripod will be needed for this one...unless we are looking at abstracts :)

Hope this helps.

Shutter speed is the time that the shutter remains open, you need atleast a good point and shoot camera to set the shutter speeds.

Shutter speed – The camera's shutter speed is a measurement of how long its shutter remains open as the picture is taken. The slower the shutter speed, the longer the exposure time. When the shutter speed is set to 1/125 or simply 125, this means that the shutter will be open for exactly 1/125th of one second. The shutter speed and aperture together control the total amount of light reaching the sensor. Some digital cameras have a shutter priority mode that allows you to set the shutter speed to your liking.

I'll make the assumption that the Nokia 6680 camera phone will not have a manual mode to alter these functions. Unfortunately, like many of the Point & Shoot users on the site, this challenge is probably not accessible for you.

I don't believe that this is a valid statement and will discourage many people with actual camera's from attemting this challenge. Why bring people down?

It's a member challenge anyway, not an open one, and OP is a registered member, so... But for sure, many P&S cameras allow setting shutter speed up to a few seconds.

My longest exposure is 1/2 second.

Which is plenty long enough with some creativity to make the viewers believe!

But not to actually meet the challenge critera. How would I live with myself?

Just don't look for it to be there between 4-5:00am... ;-)

I want to apologize, I didn't mean it to be discouraging. I must have simply not understood the operation of the point and shoot digital cameras which I've used. [removed nonsense]

Edit: I was obviously very wrong about there being a cap on the shutter speed... I'm having to look hard and quite far back to find a camera without suitable manual controls, everything out there which I've used apparently did have the abilities and my memory was simply wrong. Sorry.

Your phone captures photos with EXIF data?

It will be fun to see what you can do with a phone cam.

I've seen a couple websites out there that have photo stuff just for phone cams. I think there's one that sony sponsored.

There are actually some pretty decent pics.

I saw a 6mp phone camera the other day and the 3mp cams are already coming out. Give them enough light and you can actually take something that looks somewhat half decent in 640x480

But any of them attach EXIF data onto the files to-date?
I know Sony is pushing out very decent camera-phones lately.

Yes ,all the camera phones attach EXIF data to the files. We can view the data when we transfer the photos to a PC.

uber cool! Damn, maybe it's time I upgrade mine too.
Wouldn't hurt to have a "camera" with me all the time (even into the loo)

Just to clarify, the dates are inclusive for submission. Submission closes after the day ends; in otherwards when the clock rolls-over to midnight tomorrow. It's already past midnight today EST.

And that's techincally correct, the best kind of correct!
