This owl decided to pay my little boy a visit in his bedroom tonight right on bedtime. I am not sure who was more scared...the owl or my son. I managed to get some photos in though before hubby came home to rescue it...LOL!!

Wow! He came in your house?? How'd you wind up catching him?

Left you a comment.

Wow! What a nice image!
(All we get in our bedrooms at night are fruit bats--and they're not so attractive as all that.)

cool - does your house have walls?

Wow! That one should go on the wall!

Hahahaha...thanks everyone. Yes our house does have walls but he flew in through the window and curtains. As I said in response to Butterflys comment on my image he is about 35cm long with a wing span of about 60cm. This doesn't sound very big but when he is flying rampant around a room with a screaming child...he was definitely big enough.

I was not game to go in there because of those claws so when hubby came home he got in and managed to catch him with our bird net. Then he released him back out into the night.

Yikes, that's quite large actually! I'm not sure I'd go in there either. :-)

Wow, that is just insane he would fly in your house.

Wonderful photo.

Whoah, that's a pretty cool thing to have happen (I can understand how it would be scary though). I've never seen an owl that close. Nice picture too.

I finally got around to having a look at some of the other photos of the owl and put these three together to give you an indication of this birds patterning and size. Enjoy!!

Eat him only if he's a 'spotted owl'! :)

Dag nab it! I love owls, and I couldn't get a decent picture of one if my life depended on it. Now, I have to hate you, Judi ;).

He was probably chasing an insect, but you know what they say "Owly to bed, and Owly to rise"

Hahahaha....you are all too funny. The boobook eats small birds, mice and moths. We suspect that he was chasing a moth when he entered the house. So please don't hate me LOL!! My son was screaming and terrified but by the next morning we were able to have a chat with him and tell him how special he is to have such a beautiful visitor. I have only been visited by cats, snakes, small birds and insects. I have never seen an owl in the house before...so he must be very lucky. So now my son has the nickname of Harry Potter and is feeling much better about owls. Phew!! Thank goodness for Harry Potter...lol!!

I want to put up an owl house, but my dad says the last thing we need is a rassafracking owl. I told him we already have one around somewhere because I can hear it. I'd just like to also see it.

They are such beautiful creatures. The boobook is a common owl but rarely seen. We have seen one twice before on our aviaries at night but you can never get even remotely close for a good look or a photo. They are such free beautiful creatures. I don't mind them coming for a visit but the Kestrels are a different matter. I can be standing 2 foot in front of them with the hose turned on them and they will just look at me....mongrel things!! They like to rip the birds through the aviaries.

Last winter, we had several grey owls migrate to the area of Canada where I live, and we got to enjoy seeing some marvelous owls. A dear friend of mine, Dim7 manage to get this beautiful shot....

Both of us romped through the woods in snow up to....well you know... just so we could get some shots of these birds.

This is a really bad photo but this was an owl that we found sitting on the edge of our pool last year. I think it's a frog mouth owl. It looks like tree bark, would be pretty much impossible to see in a tree. Unfortunately two other birds that were nesting in the tree started swooping it and then my dog ran at it. He didn't touch it but the owl died, I think of fright. We are assuming it was either a baby learning to fly or an injured bird. Such a shame, I shed a tear along with my kids.

That is a beautiful photo. It is amazing what extremes us crazy photographers go to to get the shots...but isn't it just worth it?

Thanks so much for sharing.

Yes...that is definitely a Tawny Frog Mouth. I am also a bird rescuer, but mainly for small birds. My biggest rescue was 14 Zebra finches from their nests as they were getting eaten by Magpies in the area. As they ranged from 1 day old to 8 days old, they had to be fed around the clock every 2 hours. The little ones were about 2cm long. They lived with me and then came with me when I had to do talks at local schools on Bird Rescue.

I did get called in to Rescue a Tawny Frog Mouth that had been left sitting in the middle of a paddock during a storm...unfortunately his eye was damaged and actually burst open whilst I had him at the vets, so they put him down for me. It was a little upsetting for the children but they are actually the most common owl around my area. They can be quite fragile at times because of their camouflage. Many people just think they are a block of wood. But beautiful, nonetheless.
