Hey everyone! I have a small problem. My computer is dying. Again, I swear, I have the worse luck with computers! Anyway, I currently have an Emachine W3050 with 1 GB Ram/60 GB HD/1593 Mz Processor. The problem is that it keeps shutting down without warning and an alarm goes off. I have had it in the shop, recently upgraded the RAM and they can't figure out why it's doing it. The put it on the monitors and the temp is fine, the fans are working, they just can't explain it.

ANYWAY, I'm looking for just the CPU unit, desktop to replace this one. I've been looking around and would like at least the same speed this one has and size as far as hard drive and such. This one also has 6 USB Ports and connects through the cable LAN for internet. Telephone modem is not needed. I've been checking Ebay and such but not finding anything I really want. Anyone have any hot leads on a reliable system? One that won't shut down while I'm processing pictures?

Thanks for the help!

A while back there was a worm that was causing the computers to do this. Maybee it's that. It doesn't sound like a processor problem.

edit:

You said they added ram. Trying switching the RAM modules in there slots.

From my experience the larger amount of RAM goes in the first slot the lesser in the second. I have seen this cause boot problems TOOOOOOOOOO many times.

Spoke to hubby (systems integrator aka hardware guru) and he immediately said you have some bad ram .. hope it helps .. it's cheaper to replace that than buy a new system.

I just had the RAM upgraded, not sure if they took out the old one or just added to it. I'll call tomorrow and find out. Thanks.

Your Ram can be 99.9% good everytime the computer hit the .1 you'll have trouble even if you add 4GB.

Newegg

ED: there are two ABS machines on the top row... V1D 40 with a decent ATI Radeon and V2 30 with nVideo 6100 Series, both AMD 64 gbic lan and on and on... move your mem to this box assuming you have PC3200 (400Mhz)

Monarch Computers configure your own...

ED: Again

Another place that peeps go to a lot for barebones is PC Club This is a 4G AMD64 for $649

Usually upgrading a RAM is just adding extra RAM to the available slots....

A simple test to see if this is the real problem...if you know where the RAM is, open the machine and remove the old RAM and replace it with the new one (don't put the old one in the other slot)...turn on the machine and see if it stalls again

Need any help removing the RAM, pm me, I am sure I/you can find some pictures online showing you how to do it.

The website pricewatch.com has the prices from different sites. You could get a amd64 for about $150 (motherboard and processor) and it would be much faster than what you have.

Edit: I have built several computers, if you need any help, PM me.

Back-up your stuff, format the disk, and re-install windows.

Ideas to try:

- Anti-Viral/spyware (run full scans then disable temporarily)

- Swap out the memory, do this especially if you get a lot of weird alerts Error at x83FF382D83C, etc.

- Consider replacing the power-supply. Often this can be the source of many untraceable problems. Many power supplies are cheap and poorly made, they don't provide good regulated current. The result is power fluctuations cause processing glitches.

I have a couple of questions... where did you get this eMachine w3050?

Where are you getting that it has a 1593Mhz Processor from?

1593Mhz is the clock speed for something along the lines of an AMD 1900+, the eMachine W3050 ships with an AMD 3000+ Sempron (3G) which the clock frequency should be 1800Mhz or 2000Mhz.

Has someone played with settings in BIOS (when the machine comes on you see press Del to enter setup). Or did you buy it used and someone slipped you a mickey? Or a lot of times a friend has a friend who works on computers?

Something don't add up here...

ED: Your model should be running at 2,000Mhz (2Ghz) upon further scrutiny.

Okay, update on the problem. It went away for a while, no shutdowns, nothing. Now it's back, so I went in, checked the ram modules. They are the same size, so I removed the old one and put the new on in the first slot. Guess what. Yep, ran for about 3 hours and then shut down again :( Luckily I got the laptop back up and running so at least I can be on line but I've noticed a huge difference in how the pictures look on here compared to the desktop, gonna have to check the screen! ;)

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Hook your desktop monitor to your laptop ;-)

Remove the new stick of ram and put the old one in it's place .. see if the same thing happens. Sorry to hear you are still having problems.

Alrighty then...

If you swapped out the RAM different sticks in different slots one at a time and it still has the same issue.

You have one of two things... CPU overheating or the powersupply is going.

Digging around in eMachine forums either is not uncommon thing. Seems to happen a lot with eMachines.

eMachines seem to be underpowered with generic 250w powersupplies. Many had to replace their P/S after two years use...same symptom as yours. I have seen it a ton of times now, blown a couple of P/Ss myself through OverClocking and Underpowering a system.

Others (same syptom) with CPU over heating were lucky enough to just take canned air and blow the junk out of CPU fan and that solved their problem.

Clean the whole case out, we put these towers on the floor most of the time...they have an intake fan in the front that sucks up all the cat hair in the house...drags it across the CPU and Video Card fans and then exhaust (usually near the top) try to push it out.

Another test for overheating...take the side cover off, have the pewter somewhere that its not closed in and let it run for a while and see if it heats up... you can take small desk fan and point it inside the case to if you want it a little cooler. If it doesn't shut down then we have a CPU overheating problem. The CPU fan (from the forums) was another place eMachine put the minimum fan they could.

We could have you run Motherboard Monitor and tell exactly what your CPU temp is and what the fans are doing... I will see if I can find the util to download.
