I know there's a queue ..... and this may not even be the right place to be raising this point, but here goes anyhow.

I joined DPC at the tail end of last year, and became a full member in February 2006. To date I've entered 13 (lucky for some) challenges and am generally scoring dead average 4.5 to 5.5's. I would like to improve this, obviously, and yet am stuck in the abyss of low-comment-land.

Each entry I submit I tick that little box asking for an in-depth critique and yet I've still never, ever had one. Am I doing something wrong? Are only higher rated images critiqued? Or have I just fallen through the net into obscurity?!

I've read some of the CC comments on others' images and find them generally very helpful and certainly more in depth than most comments made by voters. What does a girl have to do to get one of these precious things?

I've also ticked and not got anything. I think it's a case of lots of submissions recently and not enough CC'ers

Similar story here - would have thought I would have had some feedback given that I scored the lowest mark in DUOTONE II!

Chuckle - or maybe it was obvious why it scored so low!

A critique would be useful though...

Left comment. (Not a full critique, just a few lines)

John: Appreciate the input. I guess I have to say I just went way too far in taking my ideas - more digital art than photo I guess - and expecting others to like them!

Lesson learnt - maybe! :-)

gooc - any input is, honestly, better than no input and everyone's viewpoint is valid in someway, so please - be my guest and set about any, or all of my challenge entries so far.

Sadly I've been just too busy to upload anything else to my portfolio, but I really must do that too.

Thanks to you, and anyone else, for comments.

I checked that box for months when I first started here and never did get a CC critique. Not one. It's a matter of too many photos and not enough people to critique them, so I stopped checking the box. While these critiques may be more in-depth than regular comments, they're usually not anything you can't figure out for yourself or from other "regular" comments. The REAL value is learning how to provoke more comments in the first place so you'll get more opinions from more people.

Your 4.5 to 5.5 scores are squarely in the quiet zone that receives the fewest comments. That in itself is a critique. It usually indicates decent photos that meet the challenge, but fail to inspire wonder or spark the imagination. Such images are often technically OK, but the subject matter or lighting isn't interesting enough to create controversy (in a positive way) or cause someone to come back and look at the photo over and over. THIS thread might help.

I have to agree with Scalvert. Don't think these critiques are the be all and end all of everything to fix with your challenge entries.

Like myself. I am a critiquer and I probrably suck. I wouldn't get your hopes up of never getting a critique for 6 months then getting mine. You will sadly be dissappointed.

Your average vote cast is a little above your average vote received. Have you been putting your photo through your own critique before submitting? That is what helped my photography to improve. Granted I haven't won a ribbons, but I've had a few photos place in the top 20, and have had quite a few higher averages than I used to. All I did was take my photo, and critique it and vote on it myself. Is it technically good. Are there blown out highlights or sections of the photo lost in the shadows? Is the lighting flat, or is it interesting. How about the sharpness? How original is it? Or, if it is a copy, does it stand up well against the photo that inspired you?

Going through those types of questions will undoubtedly lead you to higher votes, averages, placements, and maybe even a ribbon some day. And then you'll also get the higher comments that you are wanting to receive.

The flip side of that is to shoot for a brown ribbon. You usually receive more comments when you are down at the bottom also!

As has been said many times before: There is more to be learned for GIVING critiques than receiving them. Join up.

Keep an eye open for DrAchoo's thread in the Challenge Results section as he always starts one specifically to comment on midscoring shots.

And like was said, critiquing will improve your shots much faster than being critiqued.

Temba, bluenova and obsidian.. left each of you a comment or 2 on some of your lower scoring shots. Hope they're helpful :)

Not that I always have the time, but I also find it helpful if I can take a shot and process it and then give myself a day or 2 away from it. When I go back and look at it, I can usually look with a more objective eye than right after I spent so much time processing it. I also always take a look at my shot with the "preview my submission" button so I can see exactly how it will look to viewers as they come across it to vote on it. Imagine that you randomly came across the shot while you were voting, and what would your first impression be? Sometimes that helps me to find something that I need to fix or tweak before I make it my final submission to a challenge.

Good luck to you all! :)

I just did a couple of critiques for the Critique Club and I have a suggestion... any photos without a Photographer's Comment automatically don't qualify to be added to the list. That will help to make sure people who really want one of these will be more likely to get one.

Jane, the best way to get critiques is to join the CC and make critiques. I may be wrong, but I think priority is given to images by CC members that have critiqued a certain number of images in the past 1 or 2 weeks. There just are too many people asking for critiques and not enough CC members to make them all.

The added bonus of joining the CC is that making critiques on other people's images helps you a lot in looking at your own images. You don't have to be an expert to make critiques.

There's a whole section in the Forums dedicated to the Critique Club, and you can find more info there I'm sure.
