Along about Christmas time Ken Priest (art_roflmao) sent me a woody from his extensive collection as a gift. I've never had a woody before; I'm a duckie sort of guy. But I knew I'd have to use this woody in a challenge some day, so when "Odd Couple" was announced, that was my chance; woody and duckie together, against all odds...

I set these guys up late one night on the deck table as a snowfall was beginning, then monitored the light and the snowmelt through the day, until I had sheer photographic perfection (jejeje™).

Pleasantly enough, I scored a top-20 with this one, and I hereby dedicate it to Ken in all its wretched emotion and sense of poignant loss :-) I'm pleased I could pull off what he seems to do so easily, and bring a sense of humanity (and duckanity?) to this shot.

I love it, bear! You whooped my woody entry!

Well done. And how're you enjoying that expensive knife set I sent? Did you know it never needs sharpening? ;-P

I loved it and gave it a 9 :-)

Yer kidding? I beat the Master of Emotive Woodies at his own game, witha reject Woody from his own herd? I'm stunned, I tell ya, stunned! It's champagne tonight!

As for the knives, I must have had that backwards; I kept trying to sharpen them, and the plastic kept melting :-)

Robt!

I think many voters had an issue with the alien having his hand on Woody's ass - probably too risqué for this prudish crowd. Or maybe they didn't get the title - I'm sure it wasn't my fault though, that shot was destined for blue. ;-)

Art, that picture is clearly a demonstration of a mis-chosen title.

I'm going to place the fault squarely on YOU!

You should have gone with something like uhmmmm BrokeBack Mountain II - From Different Worlds.

Clearly would have been a shoe-in for the blue. Maybe an Oscar too.

Edit: Too serious. Forgot to :)

Aaaaahaaahhaa! ROFL! Good one, Esch! Maybe "Brokeback Planet" :)

Yeah, definitely.

It would be neat to be the first digital photo to win an Oscar.

Naturally, it would win in the "Best Picture" category.

I was wondering how you ended up with a woody.

Umm, that sounds weird, but you know what I mean...

And this part: "I set these guys up late one night on the deck table as a snowfall was beginning, then monitored the light and the snowmelt through the day, until I had sheer photographic perfection (jejeje™)."

I suspect that you set them up, took a few shots, left 'em there, forgot about 'em, they got snowed on, and you noticed and went back and said "Wow! They look pretty cool with the snow and all..." Or maybe not.

At any rate, a suprisingly emotive picture (for inanimate objects) and very nice finish!

that's funny ... my mind played a trick on me ... I came in here expecting to see something from The Simpsons because the title "Homage to Art" registered in my brain as something like "Homer and Bart". hehe I don't even watch the Simpsons much.

I've seen these woodies pop up (no pun) on some challenges and was wondering what I wasn't 'getting'...

I still don't think I quite understand them. And I have trouble getting past my own 'misunderstanding' when voting.

Can someone shed some light?
Why are these creepy woodrows so ever-present here at DPC?
Will I have to acquire one to be considered a successful photographer or artist? Or to ribbon?
Am I incomplete as a human without one?
Do they need to be talked to?
If so, do they respond?

Basically, what the f?

Thanks for your time.

They are not creepy. They are actually VERY neutral, but some people have a wonderful skill to make them seem alive.
In the right hands, or in front of the right lens, they take on personalities and express emotions.

I think we should have at least two woody challenges a year to make us all practice that particular skill.

Ok, ok. Maybe I was projecting my own inner demons on our good friend Woody. I hope it is a forgivable offense. (I really hope so - 'cuz I sure don't want an angry woody hunting me down at night while I sleep). - That last sentence sounds really bizarre, but I'll leave it alone. -

I find clowns creepy, too.

That could be precisely why I find them creepy. Ok, I'm overexaggerating the whole 'creepy' thing...
For some reason, I can't get over the hurdle of looking at them as just toys. And, generally speaking, I don't really like pictures of toys. Or snapshots of cats. Or Cheese.

I appreciate your passion...but I do believe I would sit those Challenges out (and probably wouldn't vote). I know you all are crushed. :-)

I can't let you do that. I'm working to keep my threads started and threads killed on equal footing. I'm due a kill.

Saved ya from the kill.

Actually, I picked one up to learn about lighting.

I also use a couple of small LED lights with snake-necks and magnets that I can stick to whatever to create dramatic lighting.

My lights are out on loan right now, but I've been using woody to experiment with how a single pose can take on many looks with different lighting.

I never do anything worthy of posting here of course :).

Woodies are great for personal uhhh... growth and uhhh.. exploration.

I can't say that a woody challenge is really important, but it's good to play with a woody now and again (oh boy this is really starting to sound terrible) to keep the juices flowing (oh boy, that sounds so bad).

This is of course all in a creativity and photography context....

I take it we've both been sitting here for the last 3 minutes going "I can't believe Bear said that" and trying to keep a straight face! :-P
