The DaVinci Code springs to mind...
03/06/2006 08:18:44 AM · #2
Looks like yet another free study. I suppose one could bend the rules and write their own book and photograph anything they wanted. But I am sure it needs to be something the viewers can semi easily recognize.

I just wish things were more narrow for once. I can't compete on my set up shot ideas but on landscapes and such I do much better.

Should get someone started if they are looking for quotes.

not a hard rule, but a good suggestion since if the voters could easily recognize, the scores tend to be better :)

Ok, now I hope I am not offending anyone, and I feel that the DaVinci code does indeed fit the "literary adventure" topic, but seriously, did anyone else feel that this was blatant misadvertising?

I felt ripped off by that story because it presented itself as being a mystery about codes and Leonardo daVinci, but it read like religious propaganda.

I felt like I was being preached to through 80% of the book.

I don't mind books that preach, but books that are in the mystery category that read like a book trying to convince people to become Pagans.

Don't get me wrong, I have friends who are pagans and friends who are catholics (other denominations too) and I'm no ignoramus on the subject of the pagan origins of catholocism (there's a reason after all that it's called the ROMAN catholic church), but there's a difference between walking up to a street preacher of some denomination and talking religion to them and getting invited for a baseball game, but while a few people play baseball, you end up having to listen to a 13 hour religious lecture.

I was actually quite offended by that book. Not directly because of it's content, but more because it purported to be a deep action mystery, but in reality, it was a ridiculously shallow action mystery covering deep religious propaganda.

Blah.

well hold on to your hat because the movie is coming out in May ; )

Actually the movie will be tied up in court and may not make the release. Some sort of copyright infringement case is pending.

I've read it and I think it's a good action mystery book.
Got me glued to the book from start to finish. Oh, you should try Digital Fortress :)

Oh and by the way, it's fiction so you should treat it the same way - fiction. Just refreshing since the writer used real things and twisted them into fiction to fit his story, and cleverly blended in DaVinci's famous artworks into the fiction-conspiracy story:) very smart, IMHO.

Yeah, I read it too, and I know it's fiction, but his presentation of things made me feel like it was more about the religious part of it.

All authors take elements that are real and blend them to fit a story, if you don't, it's generally considered unreadable crap.

I just felt that the DaVinci aspect took a back seat to the religious aspect and the code aspect was minimal.

I'm not saying that it wasn't well-woven and intense action, as I too found it hard to put down. I'm just saying that at the end of the story, it made me feel uncomfortable because it wasn't what it looked like and I felt like I had read a bunch of sillyness written by a religious propagandist like a holocaust denier or something.

I guess there's a reason they say "you can't judge a book by it's cover" :)

I guess I'm surprised. There is no law that says you need to finish a book if you start it. For those who were offended, why not simply put it down unfinished. Move on to something more to your liking?

It's just fiction.

Got to do something from Dickens - this quote always amuses me ;-)

How about this for Dan Brown's "Digital Fortress"?

Why keep reading it? Because as I mentioned, this was my impression AFTER reading the book.

Oftentimes, we go to a store and pick up a goodie that isn't what we thought it was when we actually get home.

Same idea.

After reading the book, I felt I had been tricked. If it turned out to be a crappy story, I would say it was a crappy story. I'm not saying that. I'm not speaking of the quality, good or bad. I'm speaking of the intent that was difficult to discern until after finishing it and reflecting on it.

I don't personally buy into it, but look at all the people who fervently believe that there are aliens because they have been influenced by science fiction they have read.

Just reporting my feeling and I was curious if anyone else came up with the same feelings. It's not really a big deal.

my mind is drawing a blank ,...
there are a lot of quotes i like but dmn hard to 'picture'
03/12/2006 09:14:54 PM · #21
I'm in, but I will be surprised if this one does well. I think it will probably be in the 5.2 range or so. A lot of the scoring in this challenge will hinge, I think, on voters knoweledge of the choosen books. If you don't know my book, my photo won't make a bit of sense.

I think I will get A LOT of DNMC..!! Go figure

Hopefully most people will at least recognize a title if it's a timeless literary classic or a well-known contemporary novel. However, if someone just pulls any title from his/her bookshelf, unknown author, unknown title, yeah, it's probably going to stump people (IMHO). It would be fun to do something like Kilgore Trout from a Kurt Vonnegut book or something bizarre like that, but I'm not that clever. And then again, he's well-known but if you've never read one of his crazy books, you wouldn't get it.

I'm in and not expecting any miracles, and I may get called (not DQ'd) on noticeable photographic flaws.

To me, when I vote its an open challenge.

Who knows every title, or quote in a book?

I know I dont.

Bah - screw it! I'm in. Never had a brown, might be my turn :)
