I have recently entered into my fist "real world" photo contest. I was very dissapointed when I saw that most of the highest placed photos would not score above a 5 on DPC. So I started thinking just outside DPC and outside those contests and decided that I should find my own style... there are several photos that I really enjoy and I feel have my style in them. I even created a "My Style" collection on my portfolio.

I am posting some of the photos already in that collection, I would like you all to comment on the Style of the photographer above you and post your own style consisting of at least 3 photos that may resemble a style. I think this can be a fun way to learn and see if we can each find what we are best for.

Let's see how big this thread goes and how much we learn from it

Unfortunately I can’t define my own style yet, but I definitely like yours.

I don't have "a style" and I pray that I will never get one.

I want to always remain open to variety - ready, willing and able to tackle each subject and situation as called for at the time, without narrowing it down into "my style".

If I had a definite style, I would feel that I have locked myself into a place where I do NOT want to be.

(for those who do have a style of their own, please don't bite me. This is only my opinion, feel free to totally disregard it)

Is that possible? not having a "style"?, I think everybody (knowingly or not) has a style... I mean, if we all were to photograph the exact same object, everyone would make a different photo. Even more, if we all were to photograph the exact same topic (sounds familiar?) everyone would make a different interpretation and a very different shot.

I think we all have a style based on lots of things, including our childhood perceptions on art and beauty... by finding that "style" I think we can be more creative and focus our efforts on "expanding" it. Style doesnt have to be a restrictive cage but rather a creative guideline for our brain, our eyes, our shot making and post processing.

I have certain preferences, and certain dislikes. I have tendencies.
All those, however, are way broader than "a style".

Hmmm... this was interesting. I never thought I had a style but then I realized these images had something in common ;) Never knew that ;)

Seems I have an affinity with the orange to yellow hues:

And my photojournalistic images as well along with the stories that go with them.

Interesting.

I love solid backdrops... I love color... Contrast.

These are the only pics I have uploaded on here right now but they show my style, definitely.

High contrast, gratuitous and obvious processing bordering on photomanipulation at times. Slightly touching on horror/macabre, but not so much in your face. With a focus on dark moods.

I also do a lot of candids. Something like that.

Anyway, for me, it's all about the look and feel...I kind of like thins raw and gritty, but that usually involves a lot of Photoshop vomitting. I guess it's more art than anything else for me.

DPC voters, in my opinion, are only a small slice of the pie. There's a definite collective opinion that shows through in the voting, and other contests probably won't reflect the same ideas.

Hey Rikki I really like your style... you definitely have something with orange, its nice noticing that after all there is some "style" isn't it?.

I really like modgethanc style, I would like to learn how to do those high contrast images... they are soo appealing.

I don´t think I have a style, seriously, well if I do, I don´t think it´s my place to say if it´s my style or not, I at least can´t find much in common with my shots, except for that they are in focus for the most part :D

Interesting thread... I recently had a discussion with an art curator in Roanoke who encouraged me to develop my own style as well - and indicated that he thought I had a good start on it with insects and animals. Not sure I agree with that, but I have started paying more attention to it. I think it's that they all convey a strong feeling or emotion (or passion for that particular subject).

Here are some of the shots I would personally consider to be "my style" - whatever that is...

I love this topic...

There's a few grains of something consistant in these images that relate to a look or feel that I've been leaning towards. Shooting in such varied conditions steers things a bit but I've been honing in on something I hope.

Hmmmmm... I guess I do, yeah... I actually have a couple of 'em, but these are what people identify with me:

I have this whole other thing I do with closeups of objects, foods, etc, usually isolated against a black BG, with diffused light, and those are completely different, but this up there is me, pretty much. I had dozens and dozens to choose from, of course. None of the above are challenge images, btw, though the second one was DQ'd on time-date from a challenge a ways back, when I got my new camera...

I can't see that I have a style.. I looked through my portfolio and realized it seemed to have no coherent focus.. I'd pay someone a nickle if they managed to find one.

Yeah....I find it hard to pick out my "style". My DPC portfolio perhaps isn't the best indication of my work, but I'd be interested in knowing what someone else thinks is representative of my "style" (if, indeed, I have one!)

My style is not based on technique, but rather thought processes. I tend to stay towards the edge and go for shock value of a particular image.

I'm quite able to pull off many photographic styles and themes. Other than the cheese photo, all these images are contrasty and harshly lit, but I am quite able to work with soft light and less graphic imagery.

Style doesn't necesarily limit an artist, but rather is another tool an artist uses to his/her advantage. Many artists go through several "styles" in thier careers.

I like white! :D

I think my "style" has a lot to do with color, sometimes its very strong and other times subtle.

Of course I have a style...it's called "ECLECTIC".

My apparent style is due to the opportunity and my ability to get close to and capture images of birds. I've been using a 70-200 f2.8 and a couple of days ago, I added a 1.7x teleconverter.

These are just the challenge entries. I've got tons more but I'm tired of entering birds into challenges and getting mediocre results because waterdrops, martini glasses, and landscapes are prettier.

Edit to add: that now that I see all of these thumbnails of bird heads facing the same way, maybe I should have reversed some of them.

Here is a style that I want to do more of.

I'm not sure I have a style. Everything I take seems to be different.
