My Bass club has empowered me to buy a digital camera for the club. I was hoping someone might point me in the direction of a "good" camera.

Needs:
less than $300 total (with tax and extra memory card)
probably 4MP or higher
pictures for web site mostly - occasionally for News Paper
primarily outdoor pictures - but some "award winner" pictures
less than 50 pictures per session
varying weather conditions 90+ Summers, 20+ Falls, fog, humidity, etc.....
USB port for downloads - no one has any special card readers
Most pictures would be point and click on Auto by non-photographers.

Someone suggested a camera that takes floppies(?). I was thinking that the quality wouldn't be very good and it would eat up batteries. Just for research purposes does anyone know what brand these might be?

I've looked at the DPChallenge web site quickly. I was thinking maybe a Canon A610 or A620. Maybe I'm over thinking it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The SONY Mavica series comes to mind.
Downside, you cant fit many photos into a floppy, plus the camera tends to be huge to fit in the floppy drive.

To be honest I think any of the $175 - $300 point and shoot cameras will suffice, might be worth looking for one with a decent flash as I daresay this camera will be used outide on the riverbank at the end of a days fishing? The majority (if not all?) of them support USB these days.

Happy fishing!!

My first reaction is: Waterproof & Shock resistant!!

I have the Pentax Opito WP. Its more like $350 though. But water proof and takes great pictures.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I can see I have some research ahead of me.

I didn't think quality pictures and waterproof would be in the budget. But it might be worth stretching for... On the other side maybe I should shoot for half the price in case "they" ruin the first camera.

Definitely more research. - SteveA

the floppy disc sony mavica was a fun 1 megapixel camera, certainly, i have a couple of galleries up still on my old website from 2000-2001. Even shot images for posters and billboards with one a bit earlier than that.old old old website

but you definately don't want one...all floppy drives are tempermental, some disks don't work as well, corrupt files, etc. And they haven't made them in 6-7 years, so now they will be even worse.

Thanks for the heads up on the heads up on the Mavica. That's pretty much what I thought, but I had to do my due diligence.

don't do what i did, went fishing and took my newish nikon 5400 along to get some pictures, weather turned abit bad so packed up early stuffing everything in a bag, camera, flask etc.

However when i got home because i packed up early i had not drunk all my coffee and the top was not quite on properly . . . coffee poured out of the card and battery slots when i pulled it out the bag!!!

never worked again :)

Second and third considerations as well. No matter how nice the camera, if the conditions it lives in will kill it, it will be of littel use. Look at the Olympus line, best weather sealing at a medium price. Keeping the water out of the electronics has to be the first worry.

I thought the first rule about Fishing Club is that we don't talk about Fishing Club...

Anyway... I would suggest that any camera that has an available waterproof casing would be more then adequate.
