I have the most peculiar fear of facial hair. I cannot focus with the small amount of pricklees on my chin and begin to slowly loose all other thought except that. I must shave twice a day to avoid this. I wonder what will happen when I can grow a full beard.

Isn't that stupid :-D

Nope, not every day. Only when called for.

Never look scruffier than your boss, or your boss' boss.

My office has a relaxed dress code, and lots of people wear jeans with a polo shirt or button down (patterns, whatever are fine).

I wear slacks and a dress shirt to work nearly every day. I'll wear khakis and a polo shirt if I'm planning on playing golf that afternoon. I'll wear a tie (even though I'm only one of maybe 5 people in the building who ever do) once or twice a week. Needless to say I shave every morning, Monday through Friday. Usually on Saturday and Sunday too, though I skip Saturday sometimes.

There are two main reasons for this. One, I think I look damn sexy all dressed up. :)

Seriously though, number 2 is the "professional attitude." It isn't a matter of what you are required to do, its about making an impression on the powers that be. This soft stuff translates directly into merit raises, promotions, bonuses, cherry assignments vs. roach killing duty on weekends, etc. etc. etc.

If you were a manager who would you trust with the latest do-or-die super critical project? The guy who looks like he just rolled out of bed, or the guy who looks like he's here to work. That gut check reaction plays a much larger role in workplace dynamics than you might think.

If you're happy in your current position and have no desire to ever climb the corporate ladder, then scruff it up. But never underestimate the importance of a good impression.

My $.92

Hi, I'm a 47 year old software eng. Most men in my industry either have a 'real' beard or shave every day. But I have found the perfect way to avoid it. I drive a rag top Jeep and everyone just seems to know that Jeep guys only shave when they want to (typically only on a date night!). So on Monday I have a close cropped goatee but by Friday I look more like the unibomber. Seems to work!

Good luck. Oh, and thanks to livitup for posting a serious, and very good reply to the question.

iono, I shave when I feel like it, I combe my hair when I feel like it. And I usally wear a t-shirt and shorts....but I am locked away in the back server room at work too. So I guess it just depends on what you do and if you work with anyone who cares.

Haha! I didn't think I was "correcting you", you had it almost word-for-word. I thought you might be interested in the precise quote (you said you were paraphrasing), since I happen to know it :-)

Peace, R.

The school distriot I've worked in for the past 10 years has a very strict dress code, teachers included. It's very specific regarding our male faculty members...no facial hair other than a neatly-trimmed and well-groomed mustache, no hair touching the top of the shirt collar, shirts and ties are required unless wearing a faculty polo-type shirt. I suppose all our men must shave every day with that policy.

I shave every day except on weekends when I am off. Shaving is a must in an office environment.

Is this a spammer account on DPC? Trying to figure out why a two-year old thread was revised on such a non-photography-related subject.

I like how old threads re surface after almost 2 years. I shave daily I work as a bank teller. I don't shave on the weekend though

Mr. Straightlaced. I'm always getting a hard time because I only wear a tie two or so days a week. Buncha friggin suits. I know a CFO who got his tie caught in the shredder. Senseless piece of clothing.

Well.... he is Savvy.

As for me, I shave about every three days. I work from home so the only person other than me that cares is my wife. She likes it when my hair goes from the stubbly phase into the soft phase. I'd indulge her, but once my whiskers are beyond stubble they drive me nuts, I sit and scratch, I wake up at night because of my face scratching across the pillow.

Alas, poor SavvyCEO. I knew him, Muckpond, a fellow of pointless posting and infinite advertising.

Actually, I didn't know him....off with his head!!!!

Haven't shaved in 37 years.
07/28/2008 07:58:30 PM · #71
Cool old thread! I shave with a razor maybe 4-5 times per year and buzz my head and face 1 or 2 times per week. But I work outside not in an office. In the winter I keep a little more fuzz it help break the wind. :-)>

I go with the every other day strategy... I work with Marines, so I get crap about it. I tell them I'm not an active duty Marine anymore so they can kiss my butt...

I'll jump in on the old thread reposting bandwagon....

I shave once every week or two. Usually when my lower neck starts itching like crazy. But when I shave I shave everything but my mustache and goatee. I can't stand shaving either spot. Heck, I can't stand shaving at all, but do it just because I have a goofy looking beard when it's full grown.

I work at home - I don't even wear pants on most days. But I do shave everyday.

...oh wait, you meant my face, right?
