Man, what a dirty world. OUr HS hygeine instructors are rolling in their graves, er, whatever.

I work, I shave. I don't work, I dont shave. After about 3 days I shave cause it gets to me.

next thing you know, we'll find out y'all only shower every other shave!

I do shave daily...either electric or blade depending upon my mood...and I work in a construction office - not too much demand for high fashion and impecable grooming.

I think what clinched it for me was a quasi-boss I once knew, that said not shaving daily (for those of us that do shave) amounts to laziness. He was saying this tongue-in-cheek, but there is something to it. If you can't take the time, which is what, maybe three to five minutes, to shave, then perhaps you don't manage time as well as someone who does shave. It's stupid, I know, but appearances and grooming make a difference, no matter your field.

There is, of course, a chance of taking this too far...the pretty boy look. This isn't a good thing in my line of work...gets you a bad rep quickly and undeservedly.

I teach kids. In Taiwan.

Of all places, this is definitely the kind of place where you could easily get away with looking pretty much any way you like.

On the other hand, I have been doing my best to keep a certain professionalism about the way I look. Being Canadian, that means a collared shirt and an undershirt, and either khaki pants or decent shorts. This also demands a well groomed face. Sadly, my face seems to be requiring more shaving as I get older and recently it has been getting extra-sensitive to the blade. I had to switch to an electric in the last month, although I get a really close shave by using a bit of natural soap and shaving in the hot shower. I use a quick couple of strokes with a bladed razor to clean up what the electric missed.

If I don't go out in the evening, I will shave once a day. If I go out in the evening for anything, I will usually shave a second time.

I have a pretty stable set of jobs and can usually secure a bit higher wage than others. I think my appearance helps there.

I play with kids a lot, so some of my shirts are pretty wild and brightly colored, but pretty much never just a t-shirt.

It is interesting that you can usually tell the Canucks walking around from the Yanks with 70% accuracy as the Yanks usually wear just a t-shirt and us Nuckelheads are usually found with some form of collared shirt. Tends to be a little less accurate with the over 30 crowd, but it still holds.

I say that because most people I meet also have a generally higher opinion of Canadians over Americans wherever I go in Asia. Appearance is hardly the only issue, but it's definitely a part of the stereotyping engine of people.

Warning: I've created this general rule in my own head and therefore it may not transfer successfully to the real world.

As a rule of thumb, any guy under 35 can pull off the scruffy, just-outta-bed look and be professional and sexy all rolled into one. After 35, well, more grooming is required. Depending on your environment of course and who you are as a whole. But if you're going to work a beard and you're either middle-aged or above, keeping it neat is nice for the ladies.

Hear that boy's? For the ladies! Oh yeah!

Wait damn I'm 35.

I typically shave Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, unless I have a meeting or some other special occassion. To me, it's less laziness and more of a comfort issue. I usually use an electric, but that doesn't do a great job. If I use a razor too often, my skin gets very irritated and it looks awful. Anyone have recommendations for avoiding that?

I'm 27. New. Glad to share my story with you...

I .. I... I shave. There I said it! I s-shave!

Not all the time though. Just when it bothers me.. And that usually happens after about a week or so.

Don't really care what other people think. But I do try to accomodate my spouse who happens to like the scruffy look.

Cheers!

From what I've seen a lot of guys have problems with razor burn. It's all in the technique baby! First lather up using warm water which makes your skin more supple and less irritable (like women..hahaha). Then shave WITH the grain ... not raking against the direction of natural hair growth. Then, and this is the most important part, moisturize. There are a lot of manly lines of moisturizer on the market now :-)

Unfortunatly it's Mon-Fri for me but no chance on weekend or holidays / vacation. Spent too much time wearing suits doing the "consultant" thing and while I junked the suit a little while back, the run through with the electric is still on the morning list.

Hmmm...struggling against the urge to say something inappropriate :)

I typically go once over with the grain, then back against the grain -- otherwise I don't get a close enough shave. That's part of my problem -- it's either not close enough or I get terrible razor burn.

Moisturize, huh? I'll have to give that a try. Thanks!

Once at the begining of the week or every other week thats it. Dont need to shave everyday.

I work in Northern California, so not only do I not have to shave everyday, I can wear jeans and sneakers to work. I manager interface partnerships for big banks/financial institution like Morgan Stanley, Fidelity, etc, but I do it remotely so I don't have to suit up or meet with them in person. We can even bring dogs to work :). You gotta love California :)

if you dont care it doesnt matter
if your trying to look good at work shave always
only some guys can pull off the unshaven look well
me I cant
ten hairs on the face "long" just cant look good in anybodys book
some jobs ie, constuction it can be a plus
pasty white with sparce black hair does not make a good unshaven look
:)

Haven't shaved in 35 years.
03/03/2006 05:17:46 PM · #45
For decades after college I wore a full beard but kept it trimmed fairly short and neat. Now I shave every morning when I'm in the shower. I have gotten so used to shaving that nowadays being unshaven feels like being unclean. And if I skip shaving I will always get comments like "running late this morning?" from the women at work. I think a one or two day growth looks so unprofessional. In general, I think people don't give as much weight to the opinions of men who don't bother with shaving.

I guess it boils down to what's more important to you - a little comfort and convienience, or being taken seriously by your peers. GoldBerry may be right when she intimates that it's an age thing. But I wouldn't reccommend taking her advice on technique, LOL.

On days when I'm not working and have nothing special planned I enjoy giving my face a rest, but those days are few and far between lately.

I sit at my desk all day and deal with clients on the phone. Sometimes if a client comes in to the office I think my boss is a little embarresed at my not so refined look, however after I show the client that we are absolute professionals all seems to be fine. Never judge a book by it's cover.
