I have been on this site for about 12 months and as a paid up user for the last 3, and I am making an observation: Icelandic Photographers Rock! I mean, they seem to have some of the most spectacular and breathtaking images and scenery. But not only that, even their portraits and creative shots are wonderful. I mean, look at the current challenge winners...there are a couple of those Icelandic folk in there and they are exceptional.

Three cheers for ICELANDIC PHOTOGRAPHERS!!!

I'll second that!

It must be something in the air there... :-)

Here's a Third!

And its gotta be the air.

I was thinking about them today, too!! They rock :)
I have been using the cold as an excuse for my lack of creativity lately..then i thought "hey what about those Icelandic photogs??"

Guess I have to find a better excuse!

Being as interested in this phenomenon as the rest of you, I did a count up a while ago.

There were 350 Icelandic members on DPC! As far as I could make out, only the US and Canada had more (1250 and 510) from all the nationalities I tested. Australia comes close at 325. Very few have more than a hundred.

Even so, it is certainly fair to say that the Icelandics bat above the average. For a country of only 286,737 people, it's impressive.

Good lord, we've got more than 1 in every 1000 Icelanders registered here... that has to be some kind of record!

That's some great research there Brett. That makes it even more outstanding. A population of a 1/4 million means the concentration of photographers per capita quality wise is high! Maybe we should have a challenge for icelandic photographers only (like the Master's Challenges) and see what it produces...what do you say SC?

It ain't the air, it's the water. All that good, clean, ancient glacier water, frozen for aeons and purified by pressure :-)

So what does everyone think about an exclusive Icelandic Challenge to see what they can come up with? I think it would be one of the best challenges to judge...what does everyone else think?

Perhaps they don't get out much ... lol.

Some other interesting facts (the more I read, the more I want to go visit). It's not as cold as we'd all think, I suspect Canada and the NE US areas can be worse. Reykjavik temps rage from 1.9C/-3C in winter to 12C/7C in summer. All about the Icelandic climate is interesting. Love this stuff.

I would love to vote on that, but you would need to give it 2 weeks voting time. It would be very hard to pick the best image.

I have just put the request through to SC. I hope it happens. After judging the current three challenges which IMHO are below par, it would be great to see some amazing photographs from a place in the world that is visually stunning, and from people who are visually stunning as well...

I think that's a great idea I love voting on high quality images.

Isn't that the truth, especially "Comfort" :( I too would love to see an Icelendic challenge as long as it is an extra challenge.

So there are 350 members from Iceland out of a population of a quarter mill, and there are 325 from Australai - my country - from a population of 20,000,000...that's a strong representation! It's just astounding!

03/01/2006 10:11:18 PM · #18
Yes Brett, as long as it's an extra challenge on the side with a 2 week window, I think we will see some amazing photographs. The rest of us plebs can carry on with the challenges on offer.

Iceland is a tiny place. Really tiny. I say, if we're gonna have an Iceland challenge, we should appoint one Icelander as the monitor and we shhould have them all get together in the same place on the same afternoon, and shoot their pictures right in that window of opportunity :-)

I like the idea! But I say Free Challenge Slug Fest!

I wouldn't be in support of any challenge that is so restrictive on who can participate.

Even if the ribbons don't "count" on your total?

Because I see this site as a site for all, not restricted by geography.
