A slick marketing ploy. they key to it is right there in the letter.

Although you will be unable to participate in the convention contest (you must be present to win), you can receive all of the awards you have earned--including your custom engraved Outstanding Achievement in Photography Silver Award Bowl (see it here), your bronze Commemorative Award Medallion, and your Full Basic Membership into the International Society of Photographers for 2006.

So how did you win anything. since they say you must be present to win.

If your picture is worth that much to them, they wouldn't be asking you for money.

Delete the e-mail and move on.

It's amazing how many suckers outfits like this DO get by appealing to one's vanity; I imagine almost as many as those who depend on one's greed.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I was at the ISP Convention in Las Vegas on March 3,4,and 5 and my photo won first prize of $10,000.00. I have never purchased any of the books, but I have to say the conference was a lot of fun. Bob Gruen and Steve McCurry from National Geographic was there and their lectures and photos were amazing.

Donna- Forgive me if I am totally off base here.

Do you work for ISP? It is kinda odd that you just joined today, this is the only thread you have responded too, and you have no pictures in your portfolio. It is a little suspicious that you are speaking up here to defend a company notorious for ripping people off.

Again, forgive me if I am wrong. I just think everyone needs to be aware of the info I just posted.

Here's a Video advertising the convention... I'm convinced...they really push the photography thing...not.

I was searching around to try and find any news of my winning the contest and came across this site. I am not defending them I just wanted to respond to the mail because honestly I did win. I have the check to prove it. I was really amazed at how many sites there are calling this company a fraud. I had no idea. I live in Las Vegas and heard about the conference and my girlfriend and I decided to check it out. We had a really good time and I was totally floored when my photo won. I promise you I do not work for the company. I will post some photos as soon I learn how to navigate the site.

Yes...absolutely a scam. I got the letters twice from two different photos I entered there. They also claimed it would be published in a hardcover book (which anyone can do) and that you could only order it from them. The ISBN (International Library of Congress number) they gave never existed or came to be, even months after they "claimed" it would be published.

I looked it up.

You are there (www.picture.com) as a Grand Prize winner Donna just below another GP winner... Nice shot by the way. Linky

The winning pics certainly have got better over there...

It is not really a scam but a Vanity Press preying on those who need to see their shot in a book. Famous for coffee table readers that the public never sees, just those the "selected" winners could buy the book with their shot in it. (Who needs to pay 60 bucks to see their own picture)?

In the past one could submit a cell phone shot and be a "selected" winner.

Same company does the same contest, conventions and coffee table readers for poetry.

That is not my picture on picture.com that is another Donna. I did not win the contest from the website, I won the contest in Las Vegas at the ISP convention. My picture is of a Sea Turtle. I will post it when I learn how.

To be fair, speaking of the poetry version of this "scam", the prizes ARE awarded. Over in the serious poetry site I frequent, we actually had a member win the $10,000 dollar prize. These people are not a scam in sense that they take your money and disappear. They do deliver what they promise, at least the poetry ones do.

Those of us who are serious about our poetry consider them a "scam" because they prey on the desire of so many tens of thousands of people to see thier work "published", and they make their money by publishing books of zero literary value whatsoever.

I mean, the quality of the work in them is mostly complete dreck, and anybody can be in the book who ponies up the money. So it's what's called a "vanity press".

I'd assume the same is true for the photographic version. So it's a "scam" in the sense that they tell everyone they're a winner, but at least on the poetry end the books DO get published and the prizes DO get paid. These people make a LOT of money doing this.

So you live in Vegas, decided to go...and just happened to take the picture of the Sea Turtle with you and it won? Or did you know ahead of time to bring a picture? Long and arduous voting and critique time there...still sounds fishy to me. Sounds like a door prize thing if you show up, you may win, otherwise you didn't win.

That's what our poetry friend thought; the "convention" was in his town, so he decided to go... But the check was good...

It's simple! Peel off the "YES, I'm an idiot" sticker and affix it to the dotted box on page 2, complete the entry form including credit card numbers (with CVV2 codes), provide several samples of your signature, any unused checks you have lying around, your driver's license (copies will not be accepted), a signed copy of the pink slip to your primary vehicle, a medical release form allowing us to have one of your kidneys (for verification purposes only). Place all these items in a box along with the $600 conference fee and if your number (549387539573294758734753249730985732904572934) is picked in our nearly random drawing, you will be included in our poetry book.
