Not sure but if you want a free raw converter google Rawshooter Essentials (I think they just released a newer version). Not 100% sure but I would guess it could open D50 raw files.

Not sure what the other issue is as I don't have a recent version of PS and cannot do raw files directly.

I don't know what a "raw converter" is.

photoshop requires you to download the raw element... but they only have it for cs2...

Yeah, CS2 can convert raw images.

The D70 I bought last spring came with a CD program called Picture Project. It is a pretty clumsy program, but you can use it to convert from RAW to JPEG. If your D50 came with something similar, play around with that program. It almost certainly will let you export files as JPEGs. Cheers-

There's dcraw if you have OSX or another POSIX operating system.

More info:

//www.aim-dtp.net/aim/digicam/dcraw/

I don't know if there's a version for MicroSoft operating systems.

I think the best one is the dng converter by Adobe, you can find it here for Macintosh and here for Windows

free program, but you have to register to download :)

What version of PS? I think only CS has a raw converter, and I don't know how it works. If you are using an older version, the images have to be converted to JPGs before PS can "see" them.

And I thought it was just Panasonic that had done that. What is the point of them producing a converter RAW-JPEG when the camera does that as a matter of course as it takes the RAW!

I got so mad about this that I wanted to start Consumer Protection proceedings against Panasonic for selling a product (i.e. RAW) that the consumer couldn't access or use. When we got Raw Shooter Essentials (RSE) that didn't work either as Panasonic's RAW specifications hadn't been made available to them.

We finally solved the problem with PS CS2 (eventually). As delivered, CS2 doesn't have the current market camera raw specifications, you have to go into the Adobe website and search for "Camera Raw.exe", the current version is 3.3

goto pixmantec.com and download the new RawShooter Essentials 2006. It's free, easy to use, fast, and makes a big difference in your shots.

Be careful or they might sue you back for misappropriating their intellectual property.
After all, they designed the cameras that created the file, right? Be thankful you don't have Nikon kit, as they've actually argued this.

I'm somewhat disapointed that people don't demand that the files their cameras generate are documented and public, even if they don't use the information directly, as it allows other people to generate tools that they might find useful.

Fair enough, but you'd expect them in that case to provide software that will convert their RAW to a TIFF for editing.

The software they provide doesn't even allow you to make any adjustments. When the camera takes the pic it generates a JPEG and a RAW file. For the RAW converter to then just convert to a JPEG is a joke. Under our law they do not have a defensable case against promising RAW and then failing to deliver its benefits. Misleading marketing carries big penalties.

I had a problem with my camera because I use a sony and they encrypt their RAW files.

i got around it by opening in Irfanview and saving it as a jpeg.
