Looks like there is interest anew in a Cleveland GTG.

Please respond with some ideas on the 5 W's. (Who, What, Where, Why, When)

I don't think I am proficient enough to organize and I have sent an email to DryDoc, the OP of the original thread, to organize it.

But here are a few ideas I have been researching lately for places to go.

Gordon State Park - On the lake; rate it a 6 (1-10)
Rockefeller Park - 200 Acres, 4 bridges (8)
Dunham Tavern - Clevelands oldest building (8)
North Coast Harbor - Nice city skyline (7)
Playhouse Square - Maybe nice to get inside the theaters(6-7)
Warehouse District - (5-6)
The Flats - (5-6)
Tremont - Spires and Onion domes (7-8)
Brooklyn Centre - has Metroparks Zoo with Rainforest [indoor i think] (8-9)
Mill Creek Falls - might be frigid :D (6-8)
Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation - industrial relics and natural meadows (6-7)
Slavic Village has a really cool Church (8-9)

All of the above locations are within a ~15 mile radius of Cleveland proper.
If we can set something up in mid to later March I think the weather will be favorable, but there are a few indoor oppts.

My son suggested West Side Market, Berea Falls and Brandy Wine Falls.

I will be in Cleveland from 3/23-3/27 so if you guys set it up for then I would love to join. I am from the area originally but live in Florida now. I will keep an eye on this thread to see how it progresses.

Been thinking of West Side Market. I've never been there, but it's on the Canalway trail. Brandywine Falls is about 45 minutes from Cleveland but it's definitely a nice waterfall. I've been there several times trying to get a decent photograph. (skills ya know?)

I haven't recieved any reply from DryDoc about heading this thing up. If I don't hear from him soon, I will start organizing this thing. If anyone else wishes to head it up, by all means have at it. (Being a newb, I don't want to create a bad day for everyone)

Okay everyone, it seems that the OP of the OT is out of the loop on this. I will try my best to organize it as best I can, please offer your oppinions on the outing.

I am putting this in the calendar for Saturday March 25, 2006. This will allow a fellow DPC traveller to attend. So far we have a pretty vote for the West Side Market. This seems to be a pretty interesting venue from what I can determine from the web.

Also, the same person mentioned Brandywine Falls. While this is a beautiful waterfall. It's quite a drive from Cleveland, but is definitely worth a visit.

A couple of things I'd like to cover, to make sure everyone has a great visit:

1. Time - What time should we start?
2. Location - Should we limit ourselves to a single location or make a daytrip out of it and hit a few places? (If so, any more requests for locations?)
3. Pay venues - Should we limit ourselves to nopay venues? The CMP Zoo comes to mind as a very good place to go.

Once we figure out what to do, I'll get everyone a map or sometime similar so we know where everything is and where to hook up.

I am going to be in town for my dad's wedding that weekend and I think they are having it on Sunday (the 26th) which would mean I would be available to meet up with everyone. I am from Cleveland originally so am pretty familiar with where most of the places suggested are located. If the zoo is an option - it is not very expensive so that might be good. Although all my years in Cleveland I never went to the West Side Market.

Okay all, we are getting closer to the Sat. 25th date. We have a vote for the metro parks zoo, I think we have a vote for the west side market, and I just found the cleveland botanical gardens which has a nice web site that lists a lot of plants that are in bloom now.

The gardens are right in the mix of Slovik Village which contains a lot of cool buildings. They are occupying the old zoo, so grounds are good sized.

Average temperature is listed as 31-49, but considering the weather we have been having I'd estimate 40-60 conservatively. We'll know more on weather in a few more days.

I'm still in for Saturday the 25th. Just a suggestion, maybe we could meet up at the cafe at the West Side Market, spend time there and then the zoo sounds great to me. I probably won't go to the gardens with you. I was just there for my son's wedding in September. A beautiful place with lots of photo ops. Keep us posted. :)

Alrighty then....

Hours for the west side market on Sats. 7:00 - 6:00.
Hours and admission to the zoo is 10:00-5:00 daily for $6.00.

Sunrise on Mar. 25 is 6:22 and Sunset is 6:44. Extended weather says, mostly cloudy and cold with a high of 39 (F) and winds of 6 MPH. That seems like so good weather for the zoo, particularly the lighting - should be diffused pretty good.

I think we should meet up, as Marjo suggested, at the cafe at west side market, around 8:30. Let me know if thats not a good time.

I am thinking that we will spend some quality time at the market, and then head over to the zoo. After the zoo, we may have time for something else, so let me know or we can wing it from there.

Please start RSVP, private messages; I would like to get a head count. When we are on site, I don't want to forget anyone in case someone is running a little late.

Sorry, I have to cancel out. Just found out today my daughter and grandkids are coming to see us for spring break (25th through 31st).
I was really looking forward to meeting up with fellow dpc'ers.

I will be arriving a little early at WSM to hopefully catch some good lighting.

Here are the directions to the West Side Market:

Directions to the Market
The West Side Market is located at 1979 West 25th St. It is across the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge from Jacob's Field and Downtown.

From the west side and western suburbs:
Take I-90 East to West 25th St. exit on right side of highway. (W. 44 is the last exit before W.25th) Turn left at West 25th and drive for about 4 minutes. Follow signs to designated parking areas. Return home the same way.

From the east side and eastern suburbs:
Take I-90 West through Downtown along the innerbelt. Exit on right side of highway at W.14th / Abbey Ave. (first exit after passing Jacob's Field and innerbelt bridge) Exit curves to the right towards Abbey Avenue. Turn left at Abbey Avenue and drive for about 2 minutes. Follow signs to designated parking areas. When returning home, take Lorain/Carnegie across bridge towards Downtown. Entrance ramps for I-90 East will be on right side of Carnegie shortly after passing Jacob's Field.

From the south side and southern suburbs:
Take I-77 North towards Downtown. Upon approaching Downtown, follow signs to I-90 West along the innerbelt. Exit on right side of highway at W.14th / Abbey Ave. (first exit after passing Jacob's Field and innerbelt bridge) Exit curves to the right towards Abbey Avenue. Turn left at Abbey Avenue and drive for about 2 minutes. Follow signs to designated parking areas. When returning home, take Lorain/Carnegie across bridge towards Downtown. Entrance ramps for I-90 East will be on right side of Carnegie shortly after passing Jacob's Field.

I figure we'll start meeting each other around 8:30 in the WSM cafe, and then we'll walk around the WSM for some photo ops.

From WSM we will head over to the Cleveland Metro Parks Zoo around 10:00 am as that is when they open.

Well I figured someone would show up, but by shortly after 9:00 am, it was apparent noone was.

I decided to go to the zoo anyway. Was a great time.

That's a shame. I really wanted to go but when it comes to the grandkids...my priorities change, especially since they live so far away. Sorry. I'd love to see your zoo shots, though. What about the market? Anything of interest there?
