Photoshop CS Scratch Disk question.

I've been offered a second hand copy of Photoshop CS cheap which I thought I'd try out first to see if it's worth me upgrading from version 7. I was trying to do a crop of a picture using perpective and when I 'OK' it it keeps coming up with the message 'Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full"

I have two hard drives on my PC. The one I've been using for my scratch disk has 90gigs worth of free space. My C drive has 14 gigs. I tried using both but kept getting the same problem. How much bloody memory do I need.

I never had a problem doing this with version 7 so I'm curious if anyone has any answers.

Is the 1st scratch disk on the list is the 90gig one and you the 14 gig as your 2nd. When I used the try-out edition my computer didn't really like it when I used the same drive as the program was running on.

How much RAM are you using? Uping my RAM really benefited the PS experience. Change the RAM usage % may also help.

Also never played with RAW on CS when I tried it, so if that's what you are doing when it gives you the warning. Could be simply a 16-bit file with multiply layers producing a huge file.

I've tried swapping the scratch disks over between the two drives but to no avail. I've tried doing the same action on both direct from RAW (opened with CS) and a JPEG but it does the same thing.

I am only running 512meg of ram, but I thought this is what the scratch disk was supposed to help improve?

It's not a try out I'm running either, it's the actual full program disks that I'm looking at buying. I am planning on upping my ram in a few weeks to maybe 1gig so maybe that might help but if it's not then I think I will stick with version 7 cause I know it works!

If i am doing a few things at a time, sometimes photoshop starts going VERY slow...... so with 512 of ram, I think it would be unbearable... and as you say.. errors.

Well the 512 megs of ram is a problem. Photoshop CS is a lot more memory intensive than version 7. I remember making the switch and noticing a big performance drop. You might want to shut down all other programs and boost the amount of memory photoshop uses (believe the default is 60% or something). Also, make sure your first scratch disk is not using the drive where your boot/operating system is stored. Photoshop simply doesn't perform as well when it shares disk usage with the OS.

ETA: Even with all of that this is rather puzzling. If you do have 90 gigs of free space on one drive and 14 gigs of free space on the other and they are both listed as scratch disks you shouldn't be having this problem. The program will run slow because of your 512 megs of ram but it shouldn't give you a scratch disk error unless you are indeed out of disk space and that shouldn't be happening if I am correct about your available disk space.

Just installed it on my other PC, which is slower but with 768 megs of ram installed, with a 30 gig hard drive! The crop action with perspective ran like a dream! Hmmmm.....got me stuffed now! ;)

OK! I just solved my own problem. In future I'll have to make sure when I specify a size of 2.46px x 3070px to actually tell it that it's in pixels, not in inches!! No wonder I was running out of memory! Doh!!

the default allocated RAM for PS (55%) is the correct amount for optimal PS performance i have 2.5GB of RAM and had 80% allocated to PS, it used to grind when i was opening PS files of approx 14MB would take so long to open i thought there was something wrong with my RAID array and trouble shot for hours until i found an article over on Adobe's website stating that if you have over 1GB of RAM then you shouldn't allocate more than the 55%. i set my RAM usage to 55% and now it takes just under a second to open files :D
i also have a seperate 8GB partition for PS Scratch..

This error comes due to the less disk space.To Correct this

Go to Photoshop..

Edit ---> Preferences ----> Plug-ins & Scratch Disks
