I know this isn't anything photography related, but you guys are my life, and the knowlege base is amazing here. I need a little help.

I am having a horrible case of the pop ups. I get popup windows flying all over the place on my laptop. These popups don't show up on the task bar. I have adaware se personal, and that doesn't kill them. I have gone to msconfig and unchecked everything that I don't want running. But these things just keep popping up. It is driving me crazy.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

The first thing I do on any new build pc is to disable Windows Messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger) it is the one that us net work guys can send messages to our users on the network (using the net use command)

Start Button > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
(left column) Add/Remove Windows Components
(scroll down to bottom of the list) uncheck Windows Messenger

This won't get them all but will get the old school pop-up creeps.

What browser do you use? May I recommend, Mozilla firefox, which you can download for free here. Also, sometimes, popups are scripts on websites you go to and are just showing in your browser. Firefox has great popup killing abilities.

try running a virus program .... there are two free ones that are awesome.

//avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (Avast)

or

//free.grisoft.com (AVG)

Also, try //housecall.antivirus.com for a free online scan of your computer... it will also check for the crap that lets those popups appear that may reside on your computer

Run Mozilla Firefox, and download and turn on some of the anti-ad extensions available. Most pop-ups aren't viruses, they are just annoying.

and turn off messenger as suggested, everyone should.

Use Microsoft anti-spyware (free) and/or Spybot. I have both of these at work and it keeps the stuff out. Also...if you clean everything out and you still have crap popping up....go look in your install/uninstall .... good chance you will have stuff that has automatically installed without your knowledge. (our maintenance guys had TONS of this crap popping up...took me a couple of hours to clean it up)

well, personally, I don't know why everyone on earth does not use Opera for their web browser. After you get to know it... it has about 20 times the features of every other browser, reduces pop-ups to near zero, tells you when it kill some you might want to see, and gives the option to see it, all of in the corner where it does not intrude... is tab's, does everything right... totally rocks, when installed, has a great spell checker that is available everywhere, like here as I type this.
There just is no better browser...
