The Steeler Nation GTG was today. I never thought I'd sweat so much on a deay aht started out at 7 degrees F. But then, it all depends on where you go!
We went to Phipps Conservatory, a victorian greenhouse. Only two of us went (unlike January where 15 attended). We ran into a few other locals there as well.

SO before I get to some pics, I wanted to encourage everyone to attend a GTG in their area. You get to talk shop with folks that care and don't get bored (unlike your family LOL) and you get to see and sometimes use equipment that you'd not otherwise have the chance to experience. FOr instance, today I used my lenses and a Canon 100 2.8 macro and Tokina 12-24 F4. I got to see (and could have used) a Canon 15mm fisheye. The two guys we ran into, one had a 5D, and has experienced vignetting with the canon 70-200 2.8 and sigma 70-200 2.8. Seems to be a 5D issue. Not something I'd seen on the web. Got to see a Canon 1Ds and 300 lens too. No clue why he had a 300 in there...

Anyway, on to the pics. Bright enough I never bothered with flash, tripods not permitted and I don't ahve a monopod. Many shots at ISO 100 some at 400 as well. I took about 320 shots so these are just a very small sampling.

A few skipped it as they didn't want to photograph 'flowers'. Well, I got a lot more than flowers!
(lens used if i remember which one)
People:

Canon 50 1.8, Tamron 70-210 2.8
The gentleman above was part of a steel drum band, so I got a few shots like these:

Both tamron 70-210 2.8

Canon 50 1.8, Sigma 18-50 2.8, Canon 50 1.8

Yes, a flower is in there, but this is a Victorian greenhouse, so the architecture matters too...

Both tamron SP24-135
And of course, some plants...lots of textures, abstracts, etc.

Canon 50 1.8, Tokina 12-24 f4, sigma 18-50 2.8
And the flowers. They had an orchid 'show' going on.

Canon 100 2.8, tamron 24-135, canon 100 2.8, canon 100 2.8
and other flowers too

all three canon 50 1.8

I got to use every lens in my bag and 2 borrowed ones. FUN!
And you gotta have a landscapt shot of the city, from a different angle.

A bit blue and hazy for my taste, but the perspective was new to me so i hadda get a shot.

Nice write-up, and great pictures.

I know there's at least 4 of us in my area, we should try and do a shoot at some event here sometime. Maybe the 4th of July would be cool, but maybe not. And I dunno if the other three members would even want to, but it sounds like it'd be a lot of fun depending on where it was.

We did the aviary the past 2 january's, big turnouts, lots of raves, but no followups. At least now I got a friend about 15 minutes away that loves to go and shoot, so we are planning a GTG for march sometime - either the zoo or night shots in the city.

perhaps one of those will be a more appealing subject. There are so many events around here that if one wants to be the least bit creative you can get lots of photos. I've got to start and think stock when we go out. the steel drum shot is a winner for that. i didn't get releases on the people, and flowers are overdone. the architecture shots might work ok.

nothing better than combining business and pleasure.
