I'm glad you started this thread. When you had your stomach problem it got me to wondering about the diets of others. I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome years ago. Stress aggravates it; but since I have almost completely given up beer & soft drinks, it's almost non-existent.

1) How many fruits do you eat a day?
0-4 (Depending on how long it's been since I've been to the store).
I've never seen my husband voluntarily eat a fruit in four years!

2) How many times a day do you have vegetables?
2-3 (I cook with fresh produce almost daily & usually have a salad when we go out).

3) Do you drink soft drinks (cola/pop such as pepsi) (if not what do you drink)?
Very rarely. That stuff is pure poison. Every once-in-a-while I have a Coke to satisfy a craving. I have a cup of coffee, with cream every morning. Mostly drink water with a rare beer. I am fond of a glass or two of wine in the evening, though lately I've been sticking to water only.

4) Do you eat meat (if so, about how many times per week)?
LOVE meat. I eat meat at least once a day, and sometimes 3 times. Try to eat mostly poultry and fish, but bacon is a hard habit to break!

1) How many fruits do you eat a day?
I love fruit, eat 3-4 servings a day when i can get it. I grow 4 different kinds of berries and have 5 varieties of fruit tree in my yard to ensure that i've got fresh fruit most of the time.

2) How many times a day do you have vegetables?
Maybe 2 servings a day. I like them, but they have to be fresh and i hate to shop.

3) Do you drink soft drinks (cola/pop such as pepsi) (if not what do you drink)?
Sometimes. I'm currently going caffeine free, and coffee or soda without caffeine is worthless :), so i mostly drink water with lemon or herbal teas, hot or iced.

4) Do you eat meat (if so, about how many times per week)?
Animal flesh of some sort pretty much daily. Occasionally i'll go days without it, but usually have to have my protein.

Depends on if I can get to Vancouver or not. Not many fruits worth eating in Kamloops. If in Vancouver, I try to suck on a fruit or two a night.

Again, same answer as above. I like to choke on a hot dog or two.

1) How many fruits do you eat a day?
I usually have only one piece of fruit a day, if I remember to get a banana to go with my lunch. If we have fresh oranges, then I'll get those too, it just depends.
2) How many times a day do you have vegetables?
I usually try to serve some kind of veggie with dinner, right now I'm hooked on broccoli and cheese. :D
3) Do you drink soft drinks (cola/pop such as pepsi) (if not what do you drink)?I try to drink mostly water, but I have a caffiene free pepsi at least once a day. I used to have just one pepsi (regular) once a day, but then I cut the caffiene and I thought that kicking the pop habit would be on the way. But, now I seem to have more pop now than ever, b/c it's caffiene free. But I realize this and I'm trying to keep it down to just one. My only other drink addiction is chocolate milk.
:D

Did you see the results of the Women's Health Innitiative study? They studied almost 50,000 women for 8 years. One group was on a low fat diet, and the other group ate what ever they wanted. The results found no difference in heart disease, or cancer. There are some critisims of the study, but it is hard to ignore such large numbers. If what you eat really makes a big difference, it should have showed up on this study.

1) How many fruits do you eat a day? - None. I don't like fruit much

2) How many times a day do you have vegetables? - Maybe once if not at all. I don't like veg either so only tend to eat potatoes or Something like Tomates/onions if they are in a Piza or spaghetti bolognaise

3) Do you drink soft drinks (cola/pop such as pepsi) (if not what do you drink)? Not reall a fan of soft drinks. Drink coffee in work and beer at home!

4) Do you eat meat (if so, about how many times per week)? Eat a lot of Chicken. Not too keen on other meats, though I suppose I do eat beef, again in Spag Bol or a steak now and again... Oh and Bacon... And pepperoni, you guessed it, on a Pizza!

I am really not the healthiest of people am I!!

I can safely say I eat pretty healthy. :)

Fruit no more than twice daily

Veggies two to three times daily.

Meat- chicken, game meat (bison) or fish twice daily.

Whole grains/good carbs- 6 times daily.

I've been unable to get rid of my soda cravings, but I drink diet only, and offset it by drinking 2 cups of water for every bottle of soda I drink. On top of that I drink around a gallon of water daily.

One day a week I have "free day" where I indulge my cravings for the week in moderation.

I think the results speak for themselves. :) My Progress

.

1. Try to eat one or two
2. Eat on average three or four portions per day, usually with my main meal
3. Rarely but when I do it's Diet coke. But I do drink a glass of red wine each night and copious tea and coffee with the odd G & T. Do drink about a litre of water each day.
4. Most days once, occasionally twice. Also eat fish and veggie meals.

Eat low cholestrol spread and way too much cheese. Try to avoid carbs and sugar as need to lose weight.
Use semi skinned milk.

1. 2-3 times a day
2. 2-3 times a day
3 Never (water, tea & wine)
4. Never really eat red meat. Fish & no antibiotic no hormone chicken maybe once a week.

Also I completely replaced milk with soymilk, eat oatmeal every morning, and completely make our own bread products from grains. Commercial fours & bread products were heated so much when the four was milled that very little if any of the nutritional is left (much the same way that over cooking vegetables does the same thing), that’s why it has to be enriched.

old email I got...may be useful to some of you trying to eat healthy ;)

HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!!!!"
