I'll be in Salem, Oregon with work on the 3rd of March, but I have a few days off when I am finished for seeing the sights, etc.

I want to see the stacks, etc and need other good sights around. I have about 3 days, until the 7th of March, so I'm going to rent a car and drive along the coast.

Can people recommend what sights to see, how to get there, etc?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated
Thank you

Hi Darragh,

I might be able to help, but I just woke up and haven't had any coffee yet. Give me a little time to get my brain working and I'll think of something to suggest. :)

Are you looking only for sights on the coast or things inland too?

If you're only doing the coast, basically you can't go wrong. The Pacific Northwest, and Oregon in particular, is blessed with gorgeous cliffs and ocean combinations and we have a fair number of state parks nearby. We have a law that makes access to the beach open to everyone so as long as you don't go on private property if you see the beach you can go down there.

My personal favorites are Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, Newport (especially the aquarium), Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park, Tillamook (yay Tillamook Cheese Factory) and Astoria. Other people enjoy Bandon, Seaside, Gearhart and other small towns along the coast.

Pretty much to get there, find a hwy that heads west and follow it to Ocean Beaches and hit 101 which goes up 'n down the coast. Your biggest decision will then be deciding whether to go North or South as things are beautiful in either direction.

Here's a link to the oregon tourism website - coast focused. There are also links to other areas of oregon too.

This one has similar information you might want to choose the scenic drives or events section. Not sure if this is what you're looking for but here it is for what it's worth!

Enjoy your trip!

I went to Oregon this October and hit most of the places DPCers Suggested
I had a great time!

I would head south to Albany and then west on the 20. If you have the time all you need to do is head north on the 101. The only thing you will miss is the Heceta Lighthouse in Florence, OR.

Photographic places (I'm sure there are more):

Depot Bay (Sea Lion caves (privately owned))
Cape Kiwandas State Park (Has a monolith as well as steep sandstone cliffs)
Garibaldi (The Three Graces)
Cannon Beach (Haystack Rock)
Ecola State Park (Indian Beach)
Fort Stevens State Park (Peter Iredale Shipwreck)

I'm guessing that's more than enough to see in a day or even two. There are probably a zillion points of interest in between.

You could search through my portfolio as well as Zoomdak's and Micknewton's and others for a taste of what you'll see.

Hey Mick, just had my 2nd cup but its the weekend still one eye opened.

Silver falls state park just east of Salem, could head down to Linclon city on the coast and work your way up to Canon beach and up to FT. Stevens come back on hwy 30 along the river. Work you way up to Multnomah falls, than up to Mt. Hood. Mt. ST. Helens is cool if its clear. I'm sure Mick has a few more area's.

Thats the beginning of my softball shooting season, but maybe we can get a few of us together and go out shoot......

edit; spelling, more coffee....

You could try dropping charliebaker a PM, he's zoomdak's dad and I believe he basically lives across the street from Cannon beach.

Here's a little map that might help you get started...

I marked a few spots of interest. There's lots more to see in between each one though. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, if you like volcanos then you might want to see Mt. St Helens. It's only 96 miles (154k) from Salem (as the crow flies). It's really an awesome site to see. There has been steam venting from the new lava dome almost every day lately. If you go, I suggest you plan on spending a whole day there because there's lots to see.

Thanks Bear. I suppose I should warn him that the route marked in green is a total of 411.3 miles (661.9 kilometers) and he might want to stop for the night somewhere along the way. Astoria has lots of very nice Bed 'n Breakfast places to stay the night, and a few good seafood resturaunts too.

I second the St Helens suggestion but only if it is reasonably clear. Most of the time the mountain is hidden by clouds. You can get an up-to-the-minute look at it here

From my last trip there...

Just another quick note regarding St Helens...The highway from Coldwater Lake on to Johnson's Ridge is closed for the season. Probably won't be available to you by March 3rd. Coldwater is a pretty good viewpoint but not as spectacular as Johnson's Ridge. At any rate, check the weather and the roads before committing any time to a trek like that. Have a great trip.

Wow, that is an excellent map with sights, do you think it can be covered in 3 days as I have to in Portland at 6am on the 7th of March for a 4 flight journey back to Ireland?

Thank you so much for the map it is greatly apreciated, simple and excellent

Hehe, I don't plan to spend alot of time sleeping, probably motels if possible but mostly sleep in the back of a car as I want to see as much as possible in my 3 days

Thank you all for great replies.

Micknewtown's map looks like the route I will take, hopefully taking in Mount St Helen if possible.

So Salem to Portland in 3days the long way around, is it possible :-D or will I have to miss some sites :-( ?

I plan to see as much as possible, even if that means sleeping in the back of a car.

What time will sunrise be at around Cannon Beach in early March?

Thank you all very much for the responses.

These days, Sunrise is 7:10AM and sunset is 5:50PM. Both Cannon Beach and Ecola State park are situated under a low ridge of hills so actual direct sunlight comes probably 40 minutes later. I love shooting right at the sunrise time because you can sometimes get the pink in the clouds at sea and because I like long shutter speeds.

You could do that trip in 3 days. No problem.

Whoops. Looked up Cannon Beach for March 3rd. It's closer to 6:50AM and 6:00PM.

Three days should give you plenty of time to get a good overview of all the sites I showed on the map. Of course, you could spend a lot more time seeing some of them more thoroughly. For instance, it would take several days just to get a good look at all of the waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge. By the way, if you go to the falls, try to get there early in the morning, as the light is usually much better then. Also, sunrise is a good time to photograph the coast, but the sunsets are even better.

Joe’s (ace flyman) suggestion of Silver Falls is another good idea. It’s only a short drive from Salem too. It’s a great spot with lots of waterfalls and hiking trails.

Have a great trip, and post some shots when you can!

Thank you all for the replies.

I think I will follow Mick's map going out from Salem and go clockwise towards Portland and try to squeeze in a few other spots like Mount St Helen if possible.

Ace mention a meetup, if people want to do that, that would be cool and I'll buy a few beers.

Thank you

This is the Mo's restaurant indicated on Mick's map south of Lincoln City, Oregon on the first leg of your journey. Mo's is the "must eat" location on the Oregon Coast for clam chowder. It is right on Siletz Bay.

To give you an idea what to see in the general Lincoln City, Oregon USA area are some pictures I took in this gallery:
Lincoln City, Oregon area

Of course, you will likely have damp "Ireland-like" weather there in March. ;)

During breaks or after hours while in Salem the State Capital building makes a good photography subject. It is not a large town and the capital is in the center. A couple other pictures from the Salem vicinity are here:
Salem and vicinity

It is 88 kilometers (55 miles) from Salem to Lincoln City. The drive to the coast from Salem over the Cascade Mountains has nice views of big douglas fir trees similar to this.

Leaving early from Salem to end at the beaches up by Seaside for sunset pictures of Haystack Rock or other coastal areas made famous with DPC ribbon winning images will make an ambitious but nice first day.

Being a famous volcano not far from Portland that fellow Irish would recognize it would be nice to get pictures of it if the weather permits. On Mick's map, Multnomah Falls is a classic photo opportunity right on the freeway in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland.

If you go to Mult. Falls, need to stop at the Vista House.

The only thing I would add is that if you get to see the oregon coast aquarium its awesome. I believe its in Florence, cant rememeber at the moment, I think someone else mentioned it though.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is in Newport, Oregon which is 35 kilometers or so south of Lincoln City and further south than Mick's map shows. Well worth going to, though, as is Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center visitor's center which is also in Newport. The Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport is also very photogenic.

Hi Darragh,

So, what happened with your trip? I was hoping that we would get a chance to meet you while you were here. Did you make the journey?
