I recently bought an Epson R1800 and so far all my printing has been done on either Premium Glosso or Enhanced Matte papers. For some photos I like the deeper texture of the enhanced matte look.

Does anyone have any experience with other types of papers, good or bad, such as Velvet Fine Art, Luster papers, or others?

I'm considering Hahnemuhle Photo Rag papers but at 3 to 4 bucks a sheet, I'd like to hear any opinions on the look you get and if you're happy with the more expensive papers. Also, with no profile for Hahnemuhle or any "rag" papers in the Epson, can I even use them?

Thanks

I use the ilford galerie glossy (the ones that come in the green box). I am very satisfied with the outcome. I use an old canon i850

I do most printing on Premium Luster. It maintains photo detail like glossy without the reflections. It is my favorite paper.

I have Ultra Fine Art paper I thought I would use a lot more than I have. It is harder to adjust images to print on it but it has a very soft non-reflective finish. It is like velvet paper only thicker. It has more of an art look to it than I want for many of my prints but looks good when used right.

I use the Ilford Smooth Pearl. It's like the Premium Luster that stdavidson uses from the sounds of it. I like the weight of it too. The Ilford Glossy is good if you like that refelective of a paper, but it is also a much lighter weight.

I have been using both the Epson Premium gloss and Legion Silk. I love the legion paper its one of the nicest that I have found- gives me nice rich colors without any harsh reflections. The Epson Gloss is nice as well and works much better framed than I expected it to (which is what I bought the Legion for in the first place).

The premium luster sounds pretty good. Think I'll pick that up tonight. Still interested to know if I can try the rag paper in the Epson if anyone knows.

We have an HP Photosmart 7760 and use HP Everyday Semi-gloss. The semi-gloss surface, once inked, gives a good image without the reflections.

At 170 gsm, it is no way thick enough for my liking but all attempts to find anything thicker that gives a decent result have failed. My ideal paper weight is 270gsm but all the shops seem to stock, in any brand, is glossy and super glossy papers. Matte/Pearl/semi-gloss papers are much nicer for viewing and exhibition in my view. Perhaps the 'consumer' thinks that super-glossy makes it like a 'real' photo so that's what is stocked.

My attempts to use a heavy non-HP brand of glossy resulted in an image that still hadn't dried 24hrs later. It seems that you have to match the inks with the right paper. Love to hear other peoples experiences.

I have the Epson 2100/2200 printer and I use Epson photo matte for B/W pictures, and I use Ilford Gallery Pearl for color prints, I think it's the best paper for the Epson printer.

With the Ilford, what profile do you set the printer to, and how do the photos compare to your monitor colors or expectations?

Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Satin is lovely with the pigmented inks of the Epson 2100/2200.

A new paper on the market called (variously) Da Vinci Fibre Gloss or PermaJet A425 Fibre Base Gloss, sounds very interesting. It claims to be the 'holy grail' - an inkjet paper that looks and feels like a fibre based photographic print.

I can't wait to get my hands on some :-)

I use the SP2100 Premium Semigloss_PK profile as advised by Ilford for the Gallery Pearl paper.
the print is slightly darker on print than on calbrated monitor, so I calibrate my motitor at full brightness and turn the brightness down 10% to see the correct brighness on the print, knowing the print will be darker and adjusting the monitor accordingly will give stunning result, but it may vary betweeen monitors.

the prints from the epson 2100/2200 on Ilford Gallery Pearl is showroom quality, I'm putting 2 pictures on display in the local mall next week, printed on my printer :)

Following up....Just printed my first B&W enlargement on 11x17 Hahnemuhle rag paper.....WOW!!!

Not cheap paper of course, but if you have a photo you really want to show off, so far I haven't seen anything better. I'm really impressed. And that's with one of MY photos. Just think what a real picture might look like!!

I like the enhanced matte, but I prefer the radiant-white watercolor paper and the velvet fine art paper... they are both brighter white than the enhanced matte.

The Epson Velvet fine art should be about the same results as the Hahnemuhle, no? The prints on the enhanced matte are nice, but not compared to this. I still haven't tried the Luster or the watercolor paper you mentioned. That's next. Right now I'm smitten with this one though. Full smitt.

I use the Epson R1800 and have found the Kodak Professional Luster (13x19")to be outstanding. Ilford Printasia (13x19") to be less than acceptable. The surface is too soft and scratches far to easy on the glossy Ilford.

I have the Epson 2200 and print a lot on Enhanced Matte, Premium Luster, Radiant White Watercolor Paper and have a few printed on Velvet Fine Art which is excellent and I think it's the same as the Hahnemuhle. I haven't tried any third party media, I use Epson ink and paper profiles so I don't know if the print/color quality would the be same.

For clients I like Epson, but for no kidding good stuff, for my own prints / frames / photo books I use Staples Professional Pro. Its about 1/2 the price of any name-brand paper and the quality is very good. Way better than the Office Max or Office Depot equivelents. The only reason I wouldn't use the staples paper for a client is because of the staples name printed on the back - otherwise they'd never know.

Never mind... question answered. Guess I need to learn to read the thread BEFORE asking my questions. LOL!
