Hello.

So, it seems I'll be stuck here till next friday, the 24th without a car or a clue as to how to get around. I'd like to see some sights, downtown Norfolk, the USS Wisconsin, etc so I was wondering if there was anyone around here willing to take pity on me and meet up or something :D

I grew up in Norfolk and could offer some suggestions of places to see if you'd like. I'd be happy to meet up if I still lived there, but I'm all the way out in San Francisco now.

Chrysler Museum (near downtown)
Granby Street in downtown Norfolk
The Ghent/Colley Ave area
The aircraft carriers down at the Norfolk Naval Base
Naticus Naval Museum in downtown

There is a bus system that could get you downtown. Where in Norfolk are you staying? I could offer up more suggestions depending upon where you are staying. There are also a few people on this site who still live in Norfolk.

EDIT - Just saw your profile and noticed that you are in the Navy. You are probably sick on everything that is Navy at this point, so Nauticus and the aircraft carriers probably aren't good ideas :). If you can find a way to get there, Virginia Beach is really nice!

I am in Northern VA, I wish I could offer help. Let me know if you want to come up north.

I think I can get down Sunday if it doesn't rain. If I have an afternoon shift MOnday- I can totally do it. I'll know Friday for sure.

I'll even be nice and take you to VA Beach. ;)

I'm up for something this weekend (I have off Monday, but will probably be working on a project). I live here, but I don't know anywhere to get good pictures, because I'm never motivated to go shoot. But a GTG = motivation.

Thanks guys! I was thinking of renting a car and doing Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, etc. I hope it doesn't rain. I went downtown on Monday to see the Battleship Wisconsin but turns out they are closed on Mondays. I am still up for a meeting if we can organize something :D

Weather prediction has Sunday as the best looking day (best, but cold).

I'd be interested in Williamsburg, it's about a 40-60 minute drive.

I'm also up for the Ocean Front, Fort Story and Seashore State park (which I don't know if it would be good since everything is dead), the Chesapeake Bay (Lynnhaven Pier and the HR Bridge Tunnel). We could go across the Bay Bridge Tunnel and shoot off it, at it, and beyond it, but I don't know any great spots beyond it (supposedly there are wild horses or something, but I might be confusing that with the Outer Banks). I've been wanting to wander around Downtown Norfolk and find good vantage points.

That's all I can think of ATM. I'm also willing to drive, but my car only fits 3 (~comfortably) with gear.

I started to walk around downtown a bit recently but I was alone and although Norfolk is much better than it was I still felt a little nervous by myself carrying a camera. I'd be up for a group walk around the city. I'm swamped at work right now but I have a couple of days here and there.

OK, I have reserved a car for today through Monday. I definitely want to walk around downtown Norfolk and go to the Wisconsin. I am only unavailable weekdays until about 9am then I have every day to myself. When shall we organize this mini gtg for then?

Saturday or Sunday, then, right?

And, yea, Norfolk is sketchy, but should be OK in the day time and fine at night in a group, especially on a weekend night.

Go to Chincoteague.

On Saturday I have to be at work at 6:00PM but I work downtown so I can meet during the day or anytime on Sunday.

OK, Saturday then. At what time and where?

Weather is still looking pretty bad on Saturday & Beth has to work at 6:00 PM which might cut short any sunset/dusk shots. Any reason not to go Sunday?

No reason, I just picked a random day. Sunday is good too :)

Hehe... so the next questions what time and where: Since you're the only person who doesn't live here, you pick?

Chincoteague (thanks Harvey) was the place I was thinking of with the horses/ponies/whatever, but it looks like a 2 hour drive or so.

Hehe.... I have no idea where. If you guys pick a place I'll show up. How about the Nauticus palace thingie? If we meet there we can see the USS Wisconsin and whatever else is there and then walk around downtown. As far as time, it depends on wether we wanna shoot at night or not. The Nauticus closes at 5pm I believe. I don't know how much I'll be online tomorrow since I have a car now but you can call me with ideas, times, etc at

Nauticus at 12 or 1, already fed, then we hit up what Norfolk has to offer and decide if we want to venture elsewhere?
02/17/2006 08:04:04 AM · #24
That's a good place to start. 12PM is fine for me. I'm not sure there's much to photograph inside Nauticus and they are building the cruise ship pier outside so it's all construction stuff but there's plenty around there at the waterfront.
