Rebel XT vs. Nikon D50 sample photos

I'm trying to decide which entry level DSLR I want to get. I like the feel of the D50 better but the Rebel has the higher mp count. Having a hard time deciding. But I found a side by side comparo of shots taken with these cameras and they're respective kit lens. Which camera's shots do you like the best? I take mostly outdoor shots so this is a good comparison for me. I like the D50's shots the best.

Although the XT has better image quality (IQ) than Nikon (see current Popular Photography), the difference isn't that big and lens you use will also effect this immensely. So I'd recommend you don't worry about slitting hairs and get the D50 if it feels better in your hands.

Nikon makes many slick handling bodies and great lenses. You'll probably upgrade in a while to a higher level like most of us here anyway.

The eye is about 90%, the equipment is about 10% of the equation in my view.

I still say 599 is a bargin to get into a dSLR

The reason I ask is because by no means am I an expert on cameras or photography in general. So what I might think is better may not be the case to the photographic community. Yes, the D50 feels better to me but if the XT gets better results than I'd probably go with that.

Both cameras deliver great pictures, so I'd go for the one that feels better. It was D50 for me, and looks like it will be D50 for you as well. :)

Bryan - being new here you probably don't realize that the Canon or Nikon question has no answer. Most people recommend what they have and it really does not have anything to do with which is better for you. I like the fact that most posters to this thread have said go with what feels good to you. The entry levels DSLR's are all pretty good so you can't go wrong with Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Minolta, or Oly.

Play with them all at a shop and go with what fits your hand and whos controls seem intuitive to you. Good Luck!

Maybe you should have a look at the Konica-Minolta Maxuum D5 (maybe the D7, but this one is not an entry level). I suspect that those two camera are very much underated (maybe the D5 is too small, not sure). The price is higher than the two model that you are condidering, but I'd rather spend more money on good equipment. The XT rebel looks really cheap (see plastic quality). I do not like the D50, although it is bigger than the Rebel XT. It looks quite cheap and the lens 18-55 mm 4.5-5.6 (with the kit) is just awful. In my opinion, the D70 and D70s is a good choice to start with. I like the EOS 20D, but it is still more expensive. You may want to consider those latter choices, partly because new models are going to come out next year. Prices are eventually going down.

Canon and Nikon might be a wiser choice since those two brands have an exhaustive choice of lenses. That is something important to remember as well.
