My shot for the temperature challenge did pretty well, for me. It broke into the top 4 in my profile. But, strangely, it didn't do so well in comments.
Here's the shot:

Anyone? I got one comment saying simply "Out of Focus." Does this look out of focus to anyone? I was proud of it because it was such a dark shot and I managed to keep the noise down in the background!

Comments, please?

I think that you did a great job with the exposure - the blues are gorgeous and definitely have a good temperature feeling to them. On a photographic level, I'd have liked to have seen you play with different compositions other than just dead-center. Like, say, perhaps if you cut the image down the center and cover up one half or the other, you get a stronger dynamic image that leads the viewer's eye all around the shot, rather than just looking straight at the middle. Just a thought. (p.s. I gave it a 6 - it definitely had at least "8" potential with a different composition.)

Thanks, jodie! Anyone else? There are 103 people online right this second. If I just got comments from 10% of them...

Hi steve, its a very good shot. I've tried the same sort of thing using our hob as well and it does come out of focus slightly but I think thats because of the slightly longer shutter speed has a definate effect with the fast flame movement... I dont think I can get any good shots at low light unless its a speed better than 1/60 (i see it was 1/30 here - there is slight blurring but as you say you managed to keep noise down which is good).

I think the positionis quite good and the extra blue ring round the bottom adds extra interest to the whole image. If I'd have voted in temperature I may have given it a 7. All in all, a good shot well done.

I liked this shot and gave you a 9 for it. I'm a newby to the site and didn't get to carried away with my opinions since that was the first time I was voting. But... I divied out my scores based on whether or not what I saw in the picture made me think what the challenge was asking for... In this case, temperature. If my first impression of it had been "stove top", then I would have scored lower. This one gave a first impression of heat though and was a well composed (and focused!) picture in my mind, so I scored high.

Steven, I like the colours. Personally I would have left more space on the top because right now it looks a bit pressed to the upper corner. I also would have tried to avoid the reflection "ring" around the flames. Without that it would look more abstract, almost like a flower with petals, because it wouldn't be so obvious what it is.
Cheers,
Stephan

Like most others here, I think you captured the flames well, and the color is nice. Don't worry about the focus comment - it was one comment, and probably not significant to your score. I think what was most significant to the score was that there was nothing really especially interesting or exciting about the shot. Some above have suggested changing the composition or framing might have helped (and it definitely could have). My suggestion would have been to add something to the image.

My idea for this challenge (not submitted, since I'm still not a member) was to add something else to help fill the frame, and display a contrast two extreme temperatures, which you can see here.
