I jsut had a look at the Trends submission - the problem is that there are too many pictures which I cannot connect to a trend becuase they possibly represent something which I am just not aware of!!

I guess I will just rate every picture keeping the "Challenge Theme" as the last priority

I am having the same dilemma Tarique. I consider myself a pretty lenient voter. The last thing I want to do is tunicate the creativity on the site or downgrade a shot due to my ignorance (my biggest pet peeves here).
I decided to vote as if every shot meets the challenge, and I gave the ones that to me, obviously met the challenge, a bonus point. I also dropped a few shots that met the challenge perfectly, simply because I didn’t find them particularly artistic or creative or interesting or technically sound. It’s the same old game.

I submitted a picture that I figured would get voted down due to the fact that most people wouldn't understand it, I explained it in the comments, but those can be seen by voters untill the challenge was over.

I think you mean "truncate" (cut short) creativity. I believe a tunicate is a colonial organism (colony of unicellular organisms) which lives in the ocean.

I've noticed a lot of people put things like "trend that will never end!" in their titles...

Isn't a trend something that catches on quickly but disappears just as fast?

My usual post to these things. I don't intend to be anal retentive on my voting, or beat the definition of the topic to death. I'll vote the picture for the picture. It'll be a bonus if I get the Trend.

Cheers.

I see alot of fads, but few trends.

A trend is somthing that is popular. I had a really hard time with the meaning. So I surfed the Web Dictonarys and Encyopideas to find the true meaning of trends.

A trend is often something to confound the older generation,

Here's one that confounds me - What does it mean when a DPC photo title begins HM: Something Or Other.

What is HM: ????
07/23/2003 11:12:20 AM · #10
HM is an acronym someone came up with in a previous thread indicating that the photographer wanted critical comments. It stands for "Hit Me". (I don't know how many are using it though I think very few)

I think this trends thing was a bad idea. Since dpchallenge receives photographs from individuals all over the world, trends are different all over the world....some American trends which the British might not understand or some Chinese trends which the South Africans might not understand. This I believe causes problems with the rating of this topic in that if it doesn't look familiar or ring a bell with us then we assume the challenge was not met and question the photo which may make us rate it low.

I'm being pretty lenient with the trends definition. I've seen at least one that's obviously from another country than mine - I don't know that it's a trend, but I'll take their word for it. It seems to have to do with fashion, so it at least could be a trend.

So far the only things I've voted down significantly (more than a point or two) were where the title indicated a specific trend, and I didn't think that what was captured really reflected the trend well, if at all.

This may come in as my highest voting average on any given challenge. And I must not have reached Shadow's yet, cause the lowest I've given so far are two 3s. ;-)

Hi everyone... I just have a few thoughts and meanings about the current Challenge.."Trends" first of all.... the Challenge is called Trends... not Trendy... (meaning, maybe a positive ,fun movement... superficial following of an Idea)...Trends may be political... every 4 to 8 years in America....mostimes there is a SHIFT.. of thought...so the Trend goes from a Republican to Democratic thought..even if we were to go further... a Trend...Is CHANGE....remember when we were young...and we were disciplined (wait til your father gets home)...as children...and now if a Parent did that type of discipline... all Hell breaks loose...A trend is a MOVEMENT.... good .. or Bad..that shows in the Human experience... any thoughts ?

This - from dictionary.com:

trend (noun)

1. The general direction in which something tends to move.
2. A general tendency or inclination. See Synonyms at tendency.
3. Current style; vogue: the latest trend in fashion. [I think 'current' here is an example of usage.]

intr.v. trend·ed, trend·ing, trends

1. To extend, incline, or veer in a specified direction: The prevailing wind trends east-northeast.
2. To show a general tendency; tend: “The gender gap was trending down”

my trend photo isn't doing too well, and based on the 3 comments I've received it's because the viewers can't see how it meets the challenge. I think it meets the challenge extremely obviously. I must admit that I was thinking of "trend" more as a general direction in which something tends to move, a shift, change, etc. I was not trying to document a fashion style, which is only one small example of a trend. All you have to do to see how my photo meets the topic is to read the title. Clearly, some people aren't doing that. Wish i could say more, but I have to keep my photo anonymous.

I thought about the international voting community and made it part of the challenge, to find a worldwide trend, but at 5.2 what do I know?
07/23/2003 05:59:05 PM · #17
I am having trouble judging Trends on the basis that when I view a photo I want the (subject:challenge) connection to be obvious. There are too many photos in the Trends challenge that needed the help of a catchy title to make the connection. Lots of good pictures, though!

Put it this way. . .if a joke needs to be explained then it isn't funny.

Like me, you're probably a tortured, misunderstood genius! ;)

Mine was a 6.2 last night, now a 5.0. Idiots, that's what's going on here.
07/23/2003 09:35:32 PM · #23
I didn't submit a photo, but wanted to photograph the trend in the late 1600s of putting a fake mole on the face at locations that highlighted your best features. I'm not sure folks would have gotten that! But it is sad, perhaps that folks don't assume that the photos taken are of trends.

In the early 1980s, I lived in Germany, and it was all the rage to have a Fanta yo-yo. Again, you wouldn't know this unless you in Germany at that time.

There has been a trend towards brutally low voting; this challenge seems to have merely accelerated the process.

Irrelevant factoid:

actually, a tunicate (sea squirt) isn't a unicellular animal. They might group together, but they're not one celled. These squishy little guys have some developmental similarities to us, strangely enough.
