Train,

The image is soft, undefined, "blobby". It's running up against a genre of shots, the "water splash" shots, that's very highly-refined here at DPC. So it never really had a chance. There's not really any point of focus or interest to engage the viewer, it just seems sort of "accidental", though I'm sure it wasn't.

If you like this kind of stuff, keep practicing and experimenting and you'll see great progress very shortly, I'm sure.

Deborah,

To be honest, the photo looks dull and uninteresting.
On first look, it already occured to me that the photo is too dark and blur. Looking longer, I realize there is nothing for my eyes to focus upon. There are nothing interesting to make me stay and appreciate.

I seriously think that a brighter lighting would help this kind of shot, as it allows you to get a tack-sharp focus and bring out the subject to the viewer more vividly.

I'm sorry if my comments above hurts, but I'm just trying to help. My comments are not intended to offend. cheers.

Your shutter speed was too slow. You need to bump it up a few notches or add a flash (preferably bounced).

This was the original shot.... is it possible it was just a bad crop too?

I think the poor lighting is the main culprit for this doing poorly.
As Robt and the others have said it has come out dull and undefined as a result.

Hi Deb:

A water shot such as this is a lot more of a setup than some would think.

Obviously as a first order a photo needs a subject somehow contrasted from the rest of the shot, and with rare exceptions something somewhere should be in good focus - doesn't always have too be the subject. What I am saying is that the first thing the eye does is attempt to open/close the F-stop [Iris] and focus on the print/plane - so if there's nothing in the DOF at all, or without contrast, the eye/brain is completely confused out of the gate.

Getting water subject in a shot can either be of motion which is always blurred, or frozen which should be sharp. In the motion, something else in the shot should be in focus, in the later itself should be in focus at some clear point.

Each of those objectives require very different camera and lighting requirements. Blur the water, and you need a slower shutter speed relative to how fast the water is moving - sharp and then a fast shutter accordingly. Then, you have to expose/meter using the F-stop to get the desired contrast -

The main other problem that somes into play in either of those cases is the available light, if you use a slow shutter to blur the water and have to Stop down, perhaps your DOF is too much for your objective, or you just flat out of limit of the lens' F-Stop. Of course the same is true for the fast shutter and a wide open lens - then you can supply strobe flash to get your contrast objective.

In your shot as submitted, nothing is in the DOF, and the contrast is very soft/shallow. Though you have th rim of the sink in slightly better focus and more contrasted, the eye is right away drawn to the very top left and obviously too all not the subject - again confused.
