I am (still) looking for PC software to make slideshows set to music can can be burned to DVD. I ran into someone at a party and they recomended Pinnacle Studio.
Anyone use it? Recomendations?

I use it pretty regularly... I am still on version 8 but they're up to 10 now. It's really pretty nice and quite user-friendly. I use it for video editing and photo slideshows. :)

I use Pinnacle 8 - works just like pro editing software. I've done some great projects with it. Well worth the Not-too-big investment. I worked with pro video editors (people) for a few months and all recommended Pinnacle to me when I wanted to try it myself.

It sucks and I hate it. :-)

The best thing for that type of thing is Photostory 3 for Windows. I think it's free too

I saw on ver 10 that there are 3 verisons..I saw some veriosn of 9 for $20 online.
To make a slideshow that can be burned to DVD for regualr TV viewing which version do i need?
I need to be able to do transitions and probably pan and zoom, and time the music to the transitions/cuts.

I have been really happy with the Pinnacle Studio line of products. I have found the software really easy to use and it lests you get your work done in a short amount of time, not like some other programs that take forever to work properly or are just plain hard to use. I highly recommend it.

I've heard lots of rec's for that, but the trial i tried (and windows photostory 3) both seem very very weak on the music editing part.

I've not used it extensively to edit music but I've been able to time transitions, finishes, fade outs, etc., with no problem.

Isn't it a card game?

I've got Pinnacle Studio 9 and love it. It's the poor man's Adobe Premier. Costs around $100 and has all sorts of add-ons. I used it for some short films I did. Well worth it.

this is what i am having dificulty doing. i want several songs, but only parts of them. putting in several is easy, getting just a snippet of one is the the part i can't seem to pull off.

I'm at work now so I don't have access to the program but I can take a look when I get home and try to shoot you some help if you'd like.

Far and away the best and easiest to use software for making slideshows is Microsoft's "Photostory" (free). However, it produces only wmv codec files which must be converted to DVD format (mpeg2)using something like DVDShrink (freeware).
Photostory very elegantly produces slides that pan and zoom while an original music score (generated at the time of production) plays in the background, or you may select your own music background with narration. Transitions may be selected from a modest array. The result is the best I have seen for this type presentation.

What you do is put the song in and use the cut tool (looks like a razor blade). just cut where you want to start the song and then cut where you want it to end. Then delete the parts you don't want. After that you can place it anywhere on the board. Also, you need to lock all other parts. Otherwise those will be cut also.

Does this help?

Plus you can change the volume of ANY music/noise/background etc at ANY point , i.e. for the whole song, or only some of it, or only for one slide.

A wonderful feature if you want to have loud music but lower the volume for just one photo to add narration or a sound effect.

I also like making gentle transitions, i.e. gradually bringing the volume up, and at the end gradually lowering it again.

Pinnacle often locks up on me, but overall is really a great program - very flexible.

I am afraid that I must agree with my cousin, Joey, Pinnacle indeed sucks, and I too must express my loathing of it.

Me too - Don't get on with it. NERO is much more friendly (plus it is the only other thing I can use to edit my DV footage!)

Let me just say...I have a small business doing these DVD Photo Stories. Photo Story is nice, limited transitions and only creates CD's without changing format to create DVD. I have Pinnacle 9, love the transitions and effects, however, it DOES SUCK. I have lost so much work from it locking up that I refuse to use it any longer. Most of all my stories are done with NERO...awsome program I think.

Once you get the hang of track editing as opposed to storyboard editing, you'll never go back. Pinnacle is a like Premiere Lite. Premiere is a lighter, cheaper version of the Avid that the pro's use. It may have some lock up problems, but will offer you things you can't do any other way.
Premiere would be first choice for me, as I've worked on it extensively, but Studio is a way to learn editing.

You can edit songs in ProShow Gold - I use it for almost all of the slideshows for our church, and always use music.

Here are instructions for editing music/audio in Photodex ProShowGold:

Add your songs, then double click on the soundtrack bar. That will bring
you to the soundtrack options screen. You will notice fade in, fade out,
start time, end time, and offset. First of all, everything you enter
into these boxes must be in seconds. Also, the start and end times have
NO RELATION AT ALL to at what point in the show you want the songs to
start and end. It's at what point in the song you want it to end or
begin. For example:
I have a song that is 2 minutes long. That is 120 seconds. If I only
want the first 20 seconds, I put a end time of 20 on that song. If I
want the LAST 20 seconds, I put a start time of 100, and leave the end
time alone. If I want the middle 20 seconds, I put a start time of 50
and an end time of 70. When you end any song abruptly, you can always
put a fade in or fade out on that song to make it sound better.

for what you want to do all you need is >just about any> DVD authoring program.
Someone mentioned Nero, so look at that because it is solid stuff and if it does photo shows than you will be set for not much cash.

you can look at Sonic, they make all levels of DVD authoring stuff, up to and including the Hollywood staple for putting out commercial product. Simple, industrial stuff.

On a Mac, the apple DVD authoring app is killer good... I messed with it for 10 minutes and it kills anything Windows...

If you want to edit Vidi, deep sound work, do surround sound, and author DVD... use Sony Vegas product... Vegas is very very cool, but takes some learning because it has tons of features built into the interface in a way that is not obvious.

cheers,

Another ProShow Gold user here. I recommend it, unless you are working with many (100s or 1000s) full resolution (6mp) images. I've had to break the slideshow into smaller chunks and then cobble them together onto a DVD. Not sure if any of the other software does a better job, though.
