You'd think by now I'd learn not to post abstracts to challenges! At least when I went to bed it had risen back up to 6. But alas:

I'm sorry, my picture isn't blurry, is abstract, is in the right size format, is unique, but I end up with a 4.85. Maybe I should have just done something comepletly normal and then just put abstract in my title and I would be doing better. Honestly does someone know how to self DQ?

Is anyone making a distinction between true abstracts of objects as opposed to those just created with light or other means but are not an abstract of an object?

I have the same question. How do you vote for this challenge? Is the rule for literal representation of art applicable here? Some of the entries look the literal representation of the art. Some of the others are very good images but not abstract. As some one said earlier, there will be a wide variations in the vote. It may be a low scoring challenge.

I'm guessing not, as my shot is of an object and I'm getting hammered.

Guess DPC'ers have their own version of abstract hu?

IMHO effrot to create an abstract image should be giving highr score. Not to mention, I tried to create an abstract image...LOL

Hmm 4.9. Not exactly what I'd hoped for, but i have an excuse - i was thinking out of the box. Yeah, that's it.
Exceuse #2 - I'm ahead of my time!
and then there is the always reliable - You just don't get it, do you?
02/06/2006 10:25:47 AM · #85
4.2

The real problem here is that I actually thought I had a good shot for once, not one of my usual procession of last-minute lash-ups. This is why I'll never get anywhere, either here or in life in general.

Oh well, at least I've got a bottle of scotch to keep me company. No, wait. That'll lead me to think that another of my procession of last-minute lash-ups is actually acceptable.

For a lark, I went back and found my spreadsheet of votes from the first abstract challenge (when I tracking votes--I don't do that now, except for small windows in time just to see what's coming in).

But it's fun to compare now.

Last time, at 42 votes: 5.3095
This time, at 42 votes: 5.3571

It seems that the relationship between my tastes and the voters tastes have not changed in the past year ;)

You have far too much time on your hands. Go and get a hobby, like photography, for example... ; )

As this is my best start ever, I just have to set it down for posterity. I don't quite expect to be here when voting ends ;), so I'll enjoy it while I can.

No comments here either, and I really liked it...sigh...

I decided to vote differently this time ... I'm commenting on every shot that I vote. For now at least. I don't expect to get to every image, and toward the end I will probably just vote so I at least get 100% voting complete. Some interesting shots out there!

Edited to add disclaimer: It's already been mentioned in this thread, I just wanted to reiterate ... Abstract scoring for me is very much about personal taste, so please take my comment as just one opinion (good or bad) among many others.

Well...after going through them all and then again to vote, I am disappointed. Not only in my own score, but for a lot of the entries too. Way too many of them are just not abstracts as the challenge called for. At least 33% are clearly recognizeable and another 33% are not objects at all but illusions or designs.

"Abstracts are about lines, shapes and colors. If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract.

I personally on this challenge said to hell with popular opinion and maybe its not exactly an abstract as defined by the challenge description, mine is maybe what you would call an abstract from its original form. However Ive always been intrigued by the subject and my final picture is something Im proud to call my work. So Im happy regardless of my score and others opinions.

I am getting hammered because you can tell what my photograph is made of but none knows its fullness. But thats how I see abrstact. I could of splatted a bottle of glue, ketchup, and mustered on a piece of glass and taken a picture, but it would of have been to make the voter happy. I don't see challenges that way anymore. I take the photograph that please me.

Yes I want to score high but I would rather enjoy my picture. BTW I'm sitting in the mid 4's. Oh well!

I'm right there with ya Scott. I'm at a 4.8; guess it's time to crack open that bottle of Southern Comfort and dull the pain for the week.

I have really got to stop entering challenges just for the sake of entering challenges. I knew this was going to be a hard challenge for me to do well in since abstracts are just not a part of my normal repertoire. Oh well, at least I tried and mine is actually abstract. I thought I would take a gamble with it as you never can tell what people will end up liking. Sometimes you win...sometimes you lose...at least in this case I am not all that attached to this particular image so as to be offended by such a low score. (currently low 4)

i dropped from an 8.5 last night to a 5.0 this morning!! random!
02/06/2006 02:46:40 PM · #100
I didn't know what to expect, score-wise. Only two comments, which isn't much of a surprise to me, as it's a rather plain shot. IMO, the beauty of the shot is it's context. But showing the context would ruin it, so I didn't. A catch-22.

I'll see if I can jinx myself by posting my score, which is usually good for a 0.2 drop.
