This is so true.

why so it can come back again in a few weeks?

Truth of the matter is since it is already possible to hide nude photos. Why not just change the name of it and create a group consisting of a few members with children and site council and create a guideline I admit out of the photos I pointed out to Terry only 3 of them are really so bad I don't my little boy to see and one of the other photos is one I never want to see again. Rather than hiding all nude photos why not make it a child/work safe hidden thumbnails.

And who would decide what is offensive? Or do you need to view a pic to decide you don't want to view it?

The only way this could work is by the photographer checking a list of keywords which apply to their image, and the user having a list of categories to hide - do you think people would bother?

I think people have previously wanted to censor pictures of candy.

Shouldn't we just label everything offensive then ?

Please don't expect me to 'censor' my own images.. I find the thought disgusting.. the site rules are clear. the site operation is clear now.. Thanks to the original question that was asked.. If you don't like it go elsewhere.. If censorship comes to the site I certainly will be..

If we were allowed to use the clone tool, we could clone out anything that would be offensive to anyone then like everyone would be more happier and stuff.

That's the problem - someone, somewhere will find an image offensive. Personally I'd ban bananas (they make me sick), cats (had enough of the furballs cr*p in my garden), happy children (I only see my daughter once a fortnight why should I be subjected to seeing other children when I miss my own), etc.

A few members with children and the site council don't know what other people find offensive.

My question still stands - Who decides what categories were in the offensive items list? What if I wanted to hide nudity, violence & drugs but not alcohol? The only workable way I can see is to have a list of categories that each submitter ticked for their image applying to, but how many would bother? Any other way is censorship.

Rob obviously you are the reason it can't work. I don't mind hiding nude photos if that means I can have the photos I don't want my child to see hidden also. As I said previously it would be a generic hidden topic with guidelines such as...

1. All nude photos
2. Photos promoting drugs or alcohol, with a standard being set by site council and hopefully a few members with kids.
3. Violence with a standard set as a photo of knife is ok unless it is used in a violent suggestive manner ie. knife dripping with blood. Guns would be ok as long as they were just the guns. Things such as mock suicides would be hidden.

OSS is suggesting, if I get this right, that a few select people go through the pictures and mark the ones that are possibly offensive using the field currently used for nudity.. The field would then change name in the options to 'Parent / work safe'..

It would be interesting to run some sort of poll on this as OSS seems the only one on this thread so inclined.. What happens if I still manage to see a picture that I find offensive I don't know, perhaps I'll be relieved that the image has OSS's seal of approval..

You are quite right, I am the reason it cannot work because what you are suggesting is censorship and I will fight that.

Go to preferences and look the site is already censored! You can set your preferences to hide all nude photos that is censorship so you want to fight that now?

All I am suggesting is that we make it a little more friendly for the entire family so as a parent I don't have to close out DPC when my child walks by!

Also as to whoever suggested a vote...I'm not alone I know of others who have been treated just as rudely as I have for suggesting controls for parents. Its a suggestion, some ideas came from this thread and out of all the ideas I think the best one so far is change the hidden nude photos to a more generic hidden photos, heck yeah make it a vote.

My email today is proof I'm not alone! I'm just the only one brave enough to voice my opinions

I'm not arguing against your right as a parent to protect your child, as a parent I do it myself. It's the way you propose doing though that amounts to censorship, the standard being set by site council and hopefully a few members with kids. If I post an image which contains nudity would this be blocked as someone didn't want to see violence? What's next "Parental Advisory" stickers over certain images?

You still haven't addressed the issue with any real thought.

If we institute something based on an existing standard, like adopting the PG-13 standards for example, we make all the nudes available, we include all the pictures you want to ban etc.

It doesn't go anywhere towards removing the pictures that you have previously asked to be hidden, like ones containing pictures of M&Ms.

There is no current censorship of pictures and this isn't a censorship issue. We aren't talking about removing pictures from people who want to see them, so it would be good if that didn't get brought up, (again and again and again)

Nor does it go any way to protecting children, as you still get to click on what you click on, so the filtering wouldn't do anything anyway. It is still up to the person in control.

So it would consist of more work for the admins, no gain for the users and a lot of hot air in terms of what is or is not censored.

If you'd care to think more deeply about it and come up with a workable proposal it might get more consideration.

I don't see how you've been treated rudely, not everyone has agreed with you but this is not rude.. this is freedom. I have made liberal use of my backspace key to avoid being rude or overly judgemental.

YOU have decided that 3 images on this site should be flagged in some way that will allow them to be censored. I object to that very strongly. IF these images are against site policy they should be removed and the posters account withdrawn. But, this is not the case. You read the rules when you joined the site, IMHO you should live by them as we all try to do. If your domestic situation and /or your personal moral standpoint mean you have difficulties using the site then it's simple.. DON'T USE IT
07/21/2003 08:45:36 PM · #117
Lay all your fears at rest.

It's quite doubtful that the site is going to change that much. There are not enough photos presented on this site that are any more 'evil' than the typical primetime TV show to warrant going to any extreme measures.

Yes, if there were images of people's brains being blown out with guns on a regular basis, etc, i could see the need for something. but there isnt even CLOSE to that.

we do have nude flags, and that's because you can't see nudes in daily life without going through a hoop or two. But we already have banned all genital nudity. So it could never get that risque with the nudes we have.

I would request that everyone uses the honor system and labels a link 'nudity ahead' so no one is surprised. But aside from that, not much more is going to happen. Sorry to burst anyone's bubble.

I'm really tired of the way you like to put people down! There is a workable idea there if it weren't for people like you refusing to even give it a thought. You look at it as a major thing when it could easily be handled by changing the preference already in place to include other things.

i dont see where gordon is putting anyone down. he's just using common sense. please don't get personal in your comments.

This one REALLY bothers me because you are specifically setting up a group to censor things for others. I wouldn't be comfortable with anything along those lines.

Again, who gets to say what is or is not a "violent suggestive manner?"
Look, I can understand how some photos here might offend some folks. Heck, I've posted offensive photos and will probably do it again. However, I would think that most people are aware enough of their surroundings to change the page or not open certain things at times when eyes THEY wished to protect were around. In other words, why should anyone having a child give them the right to promote censorship in any form outside of their own home?
Let's take a leaf from the Supreme Court for a moment. While most would agree that child pornography is offensive and ugly, the supreme court recognized that while they were offended by "pseudo porn" (pornography completely computer generated and therefore not violating any laws) it was an expression of free speech and could NOT be censored...offensive or not.
If you don't like something, don't look at it. If you don't want your children to look at it, keep them away from the source...that's your right as a parent. Just don't ask a website or a government agency to censor anything for you (and thereby inflict YOUR morality on someone else).

Just my thoughts, not meant to offend.

With that kind of an attitude are you giving me what I paid for my membership back?

Now I do not need to have those kind of remarks made to me. All this thread was started for was to point out there is a potential need for better controls. But I have been rudely treated, misquoted repeatedly and now I am being told not to use the site where the heck to you get off saying that? Are you Drew? Are you Langdon?

OSS, please chill out. You're totally blowing this all out of proportion. You've made your suggestions. And they've been heard.

Thanks.

Now back to your regularly scheduled show.

The important difference here is that "nudity" is exponentially more objective than "offensive". There are still some judgement calls involved in determining what qualifies as nudity, but determining what qualifies as offensive is purely subjective and personal, varying widely from culture to culture and individual to individual.
Therefore, the current system cannot be instantly tweaked to encompass your broader requests as you have suggested it could be.

This thread's start I forgot.
It seems to be a round n round
and never a meaning is found.
Give it up, let them be,
Let them post their nudity.
M&Ms aren't drugs, there's no killin.
So let's be zen like Mag just chillin.
Enough with the noise, hush hush.
I'm out to drink like a lush lush.
Forget the censoring, vote late at night
just make sure I get a 10, alright?
