cuz hey, it's me asking...

but anyways - why do we split the challenges to make it easier to vote and comment and then run 5 challenges at the same time so it's hard to vote and comment?

just struck me as odd.

Well.... think back over the last few months.... first everyone wanted fewer entries in each challenge - so the open ones got split. Then everyone wanted more challenges because a week was too long for ADD-bound photographers. And D&L (L) listened. Least that's the way I read it.

Personally, I never voiced an opinion either way, but I do like the faster pace better.

The two changes work in tandem. By providing many smaller challenges, it allows entrants to pick and choose where to enter, and voters to pick and choose where to vote and comment.

It's certainly not necessary to vote and comment on every challenge, and (with any luck) the site will continue to grow to the point where it will eventually become impossible for all but the most fanatical user to do so. Many would even argue that it already has, but that we have a lot of fanatics.

There's no doubt that growth presents challenges (pun not intended), but what I hope we've done is adapted to the growth and continued to make it possible for just about everyone to participate in a meaningful way. When I joined in 2002, there was one challenge per week, and those challenges averaged about 100 entries. It was practical at that time to not only vote but comment on every entry in every challenge, and in fact I did so for about a 6-week period. In fact I remember the site being up in arms over the first challenge to have over 200 entries, and how impossible it would be to vote on 200 entries in a week. By contrast, at this moment we have 1,658 images in the voting phase.

My hope is that just as in our role as photographers, we pick and choose the challenges that most interest us to enter, that as voters we will do the same, and vote and comment meaningfully on the challenges we find most intriguing as viewers.

I think that was a mistake. I think they should have left the open challenges alone and created more member challenges. This would drive more people to become members and should encourage people to become members.

For what it is worth I agree with notonline...

absolutely -- preferably with a challenge changeover to fill the (usually) empty void around Thursday and Friday of each week.

I think we NEED the double challenge for sheer numbers, but we should get MORE than that for members.
I vote for TWO exclusive member challenges per week.
DPC is busting at the seams, we need to do something about those high numbers.

For lack of abundant challenges here at DPC, I've diversified a bit and have accounts at a couple of other challenge-type sites.

My personal prefence is that there be additional member challenges but that they not just be duplicate advanced editing challenges but instead have different editing rules (ie. super advanced). But we need to get our current rulesets in order before we take on something new.

I'd also like to see a members basic editing.
