The following photo recieved 16 ones and 6 twos I would really like for some of those folks to give reasons as to why you marked it so. Fair enough it was not liked, but if so many thought so bad seems to me we need to know why.

It is a nude shot, be forewarned.

I thought this photo was good over all but gave it a 4 because I really didn’t get the feeling of temperature. I like the background, the lighting was fine, pose was even decent. But I just didn’t get temperature and I am one of the people around here where the theme has to smack me in the head. Other wise, again I did think it was a good photo. (don’t ya just hate the 1's thought, this wasn’t a 1 in my view)

It's very dark. It doesn't scream temperature. Some voters are done with nudity after the nudes challenge. My best 3 guesses.
07/21/2003 12:36:54 AM · #4
I have to agree that it doesn't strongly say temperature. The photo also is too dark to portray the warmth of the sun.

well, I really appreciate your resposnses, and guesses. And while I sort of can see temp comment the shot that game in forth, was a little girl on beach too? What said hot or cold in that photo that didnt in this one? I am just curious? And BTW not my shot : )
on reread-- the darkness didnt make feel hot-- ok

I liked the reflections in the wet sand, and the solitude of the whole shot. The lack of jumping up with the theme is most likley what hurt you the most. Those extremely low voters should have given some reason for their decision. You got a 6 from me.
07/21/2003 01:41:45 AM · #7
To be brutally honest I,
1) Didn't get temperature from this at all.
2) Did not like the picture in any way. Whats the point of the woman being naked? Whats the point of using that (you know what I mean) particular woman?

Sorry if I seem rude! I gave the photo a 1, but well I'm kind of a bastard when i vote sometimes.

the photo IS better than 1 and 2 easily.
but if so many thought so bad seems to me we need to know why
why? because a majority of those 1's and 2's think that a body has to be 36-24-36 to get their vote. I bet most of them dont even frequent this site.

I received 1 x 1 & 12 x 2's in my first submission and only received 5 comments, and (like you) am lost as to what I did wrong. One of those comments was "I can barely distinguish anything". Was this because it was out of focus, too dark etc? I don't mind receiving negative comments (actually I sometimes prefer them to positive ones) just so long as they are of help to improve. My main reason for entering challenges on here is to improve my photography, not to win ribbons...of course that would be nice too :)

I agree, I don't mind negative comments either, it can really help. That is why I asked what people thought who voted one. This photo was not my shot, though it stood out to me as much better than it got voted, while other photos which I thought were lacking did much better. It discourages me as a participant when I see such discrepancies. Sp was hoping for some more feedback on this shot, thanks for all who have-- please continue to comment...thanks

Jaxson, I think 'I can barely distinguish anything' is a fair comment. Maybe the commentor thought you'd be able to work out if it was out of focus or too dark etc your self.. If you really want to grow as a photographer you have to put some thought into your pictures yourself as well.. Go back and have a look at it.. Why do you think hardly anything can be distinguished?

Huh??? To me it's not too dark. If I thought it was too dark or out of focus I wouldn't have submitted it. Believe me I've gone back and looked at it a few times, I've even spent some time making sure my monitor is calibrated correctly. I agree that it wasn't the best photo on there but it would be nice to know why and quite frankly "can barely distinguish anything" doesn't help in the slightest. For example, was it the foreground or background (or both) that the voter thought was too dark. If it was just the background then I intended it that way, if it was both the foregound and background then maybe I need to double check my monitor calibration. In a way I welcome that comment cos it causes me to look at it more critically but it still doesn't completely help.

Below are some comments from other voters on the same photo. Neither of which suggest that the image is too dark or out of focus.

"A striking image - great colours , composition and lines - 9"

"lovely colors, love the don't walk sign in this photo."

So, having done the logical things.. take a look at the commentors profile and have a look at their work.. Is the comment from a regular high scorer or regular low scorer? If it's low you may want to file the comment where it probably belongs.. if it's high take the opportunity to ask them, in a none-confrontational way, if they could expand their comment...

I've only entered a couple of challenges so far and it seems to me you will always get at least one comment that is at odds with the rest.. A lot of the winning images also have 1 votes cast against them.. We're all different so you can't please everyone...

Not being a paid member I can't vote BUT I would have given it a 3 - where is the temperature element?
07/21/2003 07:23:43 AM · #18
I thought it was okay. I think the temperature element was satisfied enough for me, but I'm not a hard-ass about if it meets the challenge or not. If it loosely could possibly be interpreted, it meets. Being naked tells me it was at least reasonably warm or there would be other "signs" of obvious frigidity. I gave it a 5. One point was for bravery.... I could never do that. I think the photo could've used a little more sensual angle and lighting. That being said, a different pose might've also worked toward that end. All in all, I'd say its a shot worth redoing.

I think a lot of your low scores came from people objectionable to the subject and her lack of clothes despite it being a perfectly legal thing to do.

I'd be intrigued to know what it is you think when you give a photo a 1.

I scored that beach photo a 5: this is what I give most technically competent photos that don't make any real impact on me in terms of the challenge. I found the pose too apparently contrived, and more suggestive of a parody of a glamour calendar shot than of someone trying too cool off: an effective parody, with all sorts of things to say about perception of beauty, the magazine-driven body-shape desperation of so many people, and various other messages. None of them to do with temperature however.

You mentioned the fourth-placed photo: take another look - the sparkle of light on the water, the little gril's hat, the sense of a great candid shot. Given the challenge, I don't think there's any problem with the difference in votes (and given the way this site and it's participants work overall).

Only one shot really communicated temperature in other than an obvious way and with great grace and subtlety, in my opinion, and that came in 8th.

And Jaxon: I think you've just learned one of the early lessons of submitting here - that whilst you may have set up your monitor absolutely perfectly, many who vote have set up theirs differently.

It worked for me - i gave it a 6

Just a response to my average score given and getting what I deserve-- I did NOT TAKE this photo!! Furthermore:
My objection is not that photos get LOW scores, my thought (and what I am trying to do more) is if I give scores on the extreme ends--high or low is to say WHY as clearly as I possible can-- because that is where I think I will grow and learn to recognize good from bad photos. I was hoping those folks in particular that scored this shot low would possibly say WHY they did so.

That's great. Now give us two examples of picturs you gave 1s, and we will gladly listen to your explinations. Thanks.

When I was voting I remembered the same woman from the nude challenge, and I got the feeling the pic was being re-used, and furthermore I couldn't see how it related to temperature. So I gave it a 4, since it was technically nicely done.

I support Jacko's point.

Ellamay is right in a sense but I think that those discussions are getting unpleasing. You feel like commenting, comment. Nobody can oblige those who don't comment photos of other photographer to do it. Since there is no scale for voting, it's all a matter of taste and look. Let people be. You want explanation about a comment, ask directly the commenter.

I am oversaturated of all those complaints and neverending threads.

Nathalie
