I'm headed to Europe for two weeks. a week around Bristol England, a few days in London and a few days near St. Andrews in Scotland...

due to space constraints, it seems like i'll only be able to take one lens. as well as my 550ex flash. for the Canon 20D...

the options i have are:
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Tamron SP AF 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical IF for Canon
and i just bought a
Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II for Canon (BUT, this is still returnable before the trip...) from shutterbug, it seems like this is the "best compact lens made" i'm not sure waht the area holds, but i'm thinking

this in mind, i could buy another lens, but i don't want to spend more than $500 on a travel lens... i plan on traveling a lot with space constraint...

please help!!
i'm wondering what you would take on such a trip.
or if perhaps you know what the area is like so you could better reccommend a lens...would you bring a tripod?

If space is a concern, then I recommend the Tamron 18-200, as it has the most versatile range. If you know that you won't need more than 35mm, then I think Tamron 17-35 would be optically better.

Also if space in a constraint, I'd recommend not taking the flash, unless you really need it. The pop up flash can be used to fill in and using the lens wide open with a high ISO like 1600 may allow you to get by in dim settings.

Ideally, I'd get an ultrawide for cityscapes, landscapes, environmental portraits, and then a fast midrange zoom like a Canon 24-70 L, Sigma 24-70 f2.8, or a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 for midrange and lower light shooting.
Good luck and have fun in Europe.

I know the area pretty well, living there and everything :)
I have a tripod which I hardly use, except at night, because I find it stops me experimenting with compositions so much cos of the effort it takes to set up right. If you want tho you can borrow it if we go out on a shoot! :) It's only a cheapy one but hey :P

Probably don't need to bring flash; bring more batteries, cards, etc. Go out and buy a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and bring that instead, but it depends on what type of pictures you like to shoot.

18-200. No doubt. Portable, wide and versatile. Travel shots don't need to be as pixel-peeping perfect, and wide aperture isn't often needed as most shots will probably outside during the daytime.

Interesting question as I just bought the Nikon 18-200 as a travel lens. I'll be selling my old Tamron 28-300 that I used before. It served me well so I have no complaints. I'm just hoping for a little more quality with the Nikon.

Answer - go with the Tamron 18-200.
