I was so pleased with my entry last night that I could not wait till rollover. Was this going to be a top five for me? I was sure it would score high. I clicked, clicked, clicked, clicked, (ok you get my point) the update button waiting for the first vote to come in. Then a vote it was a 4… I shouted 4! - What, 4!!!! I woke my wife up but that’s another story. Could not believe it is this a conspiracy? Something must be wrong here! Oh I was investigating looking around, drawing conclusions. It was like I had a mental trench coat, old hat, and a cigar (just call me Columbo).

I was so mad; sure something was wrong that in the thread “Off Center Scores” I posted the following, “I have watched my entry drop from almost 8 to 5.48xx. I will say this, is it does not score above the avg score of 5.5, it will be the last challenge I enter. Except my Free Study which is already posted. I just don't understand. And if my shot in OC doesn't do well then I know something is wrong here. Maybe the challenges are not for me.”

So I woke up this morning to see it at about the same score but notice something I didn’t last night. I didn’t look as good as it did last night. The subject looks great but the composition was not good. Trying to keep my subject off center I failed to take in to account that composition still mattered. I realized that my current score was accurate. So for the people I said the above quote to in the thread I’m sorry - Sorry for taking my anger out on others. I should of knew better.

I guess we all see our pictures as being great from time to time and say thing before thinking and in this case I did. I retouched my photo today, taking in account proper composition and now I think it looks good. I will post when the challenge is over.

I've had an entire day to think on it, and I'm still utterly shocked by my off-center score. lol. No way it should be as low as it is.

But, I'll take it and move on. I will find a way to please the mindless robotic sheep voters one day.

Wow. I didn't see the other thread, but I commend you for seeing what you didn't want to see.

Carry on... ;)

Well I think this thread has made my mind up. I'm not alone and I won't self DQ my off-centered entry.

I agree I will take it and move on but I won't find a way to please the mindless robotic sheep voters I will just please myself.

Thanks guys for helping me make my mind up.

Oh man, I in no way intended it to mean anything about you. I've self-DQd myself before. No worries on my part about you wanting to.

It's about what we think about the images not the voters

I made the error of reading Apature magazine and doing a bunch of shots like the one below in homage to a series in there, and then was stupid enough to submit my favorite. You know, shooting for brooding dense black and white. I love this shot and it looks like it will end up as my second lowest score ever. Next week Im going to think of DAVID * LACHAPELLE perky and blasting out the color.

One thing I'm looking for while voting this Off Center challenge is shots that have a reason for being composed the way they are. Images where something has just been arbitrarily stuck in the corner for no apparent reason other than to meet the challenge are not scoring especially well on my card. There are any number of fine, roganically-satisfying images where the OC subject "feels right" in and of itself, regardless of the challenge topic.

Brennan, that's a lovely B/W coversion :-)

This happens to me all the time. I think it's normal. You work and work on an image. You get attached to it. You have a personal history with it, from the moment you spotted something interesting that made you think up of the composition and the parameters to set your camera on to create your vision. This attachment often increases as we play with and edit the image. The more we interact with it, the more we get attached to it.

I have produced some images that I thought were solid, kick-ass, wow images just to realize as time goes by that the image could have been much better. It wouldn't be normal for us to go out of our ways to go to special locales, fret about exposure and shutter speed, make sure all our equipemnt works properly, sifts through files on the computer, spend hours working on "the chosen one" until we're happy with the results and then submit to a campetition without being somewhat attached to it.

I, too, felt the same way about my Tribute photo. I absolutely adored it and had high hopes for it, but the voters apparently didn't like it as much as I did.

As I said in my first post I will post my re-edit of this shot. I know it wouldn't of fit the challenge but here is my new photograph. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks to everyone that voted and commented.

Scott, I like your challenge version better. You captured the bird beautifully. I think the off-center one is much more "unique" and works well even though the subject is common.
